It has been announced that Mitsuo Iso’s original anime Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo (lit. Boys and Girls in Outer Space) will go into production. Mitsuo Iso, who is known for directing Dennou Coil and other animations is also in charge of direction and script. The anime’s character designer Kenichi Yoshida has prepared an originally drawn concept visual.
The good news was revealed at Anime Central, an anime convention held in Chicago, USA. Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo takes place in outer space in 2045, where the internet and AI has spread through the stars. A large-scale accident occurs inside a space station and leaves only the children behind. They make use of drones and other machines, which they operate via narrow bands, SNS, low intelligence AI, or smartphones to overcome numerous crises.
In charge of the anime’s production is SIGNAL.MD. Follow-up reports on the timing of the release and the distribution channels will be released in the near future.
Iso wrote and directed the TV anime Dennou Coil, which was released in 2007 and won an ‘Excellence Prize’ in Japan Media Arts Festival Awards held by Japan’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs and The 29th Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2007.
Iso commented on his work, ‘I have not been able to find many anime that are set in space, therefore I just thought about making one myself. The universe does not have to be distant anymore like in science fiction, but it is becoming a place where we can actually go. I want to draw adventures experienced by youths thrown into such an environment in a way like I have literally been there.’
