The stage play adaptation of Naoshi Arakawa’s Your Lie in April had a dress rehearsal and impromptu interview on 23 August at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo.
Your Lie in April is a youthful story about Kousei Arima, a prodigy pianist with a traumatic past, and Kaori Miyazono a violinist and their personal growth. Kousei, who can no longer hear the sound of his piano, is played by Shintaro Anzai, and Kaori, who encourages Kousei while harboring a secret herself, is played by Arisa Matsunaga.
The story starts with Kousei and his childhood friend Tsubaki Sawabe (Misato Kawauchi) meeting Kaori. Kousei hesitates when he is forced by Kaori to accompany her violin performance but he learns to face the piano once again through Kaori’s energetic innocence. The story depicts the personal growth of Kousei, Tsubaki, and the girl-magnet Ryota Watari (Masanari Wada).
The highlights of the stage play are the piano and violin recital scenes. The music is played live: the piano is played by the musician Yuta Matsumura and the violin is played by the young violinist Shuko Kobayashi. The musical performance and the cast’s acting during the scene where Kousei and Kaori play together is remarkable.
At the impromptu interview which took place before the dress rehearsal, Anzai, Matsunaga, Kawauchi, and Wada were joined by Haruka Yamashita, who plays Emi Igawa, and Shoujiro Yokoi, who plays Takeshi Aiza. When asked about his feelings towards the stage play, Anzai seemed nervous, ‘During rehearsal, the cast and staff practiced as one. We are not the one who will be reviewing the show but we created a piece that will definitely reach the audience.’ Matsunaga, who was also nervous, said, ‘I want to try with all my might to express all we’ve practiced onstage.’
About the live performances, Anzai said, ‘Matching your breathing to the musician’s was difficult’ and Yokoi, who had no experience with the piano, said ‘I found the fun in piano through this play. I thought that learning to like something is like this and I want to continue playing the instrument.’
Kawauchi, who plays Tsubaki, the head of the soft ball club, said that she first swung a bat for this play, ‘At the rehearsal hall, I did many practice swings. The Koshien tournament was also going on so I watched live broadcasts to see the batters’ movements.’ She mentioned that there were many scenes where she changes from her softball uniform to her school uniform so she practiced quick changes. Wada commented ‘There was an incident where Tsubaki came out with her shoes on the wrong feet [laugh].’
Finally, Anzai said, ‘I want a lot of things to reach the audience. We will work hard so that that feeling properly reaches them.’ Once again, Matsunaga commented, ‘There are scenes with live performances, so not only the acting, but I hope the music also reaches everyone. We will carefully act out our parts.’
The play Your Lie in April will run at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo from 24 August until 3 September 2017 and at Umeda Arts Theater Drama City, Osaka from 7 September until 10 September.
