Yuki Suetsugu’s popular manga Chihayafuru will get a third live-action movie adaptation! It will be a sequel to the previous films, set two years after Part 2. The new film Chihayafuru -Musubi- (Chihayafuru -Conclusion-) will show Chihaya and the other members of the competitive karuta club mature and grow as characters.
The characters will be played by the same cast as in the first two movies, including Suzu Hirose (Chihaya Ayase), Shuuhei Nomura (Taichi Mashima), Mackenyu (Arata Wataya), and Mone Kamishiraishi (Kanade Ooe). The new cast members will be Mio Yuuki as Sumire Hanano, the student who falls in love with Taichi and joins the karuta club, and Hayato Sano as Akihiro Tsukuba, another new club member. Kaya Kiyohara will play Iori Wagatsuma, the present semi-Karuta Queen. She is an original character for the movie, and she will become Chihaya’s rival. Last, Kento Kaku will play the most talented Meijin (Master), Hisashi Suou.
Suetsugu commented ‘I had the opportunity to watch the new cast members practice karuta. Their faces and attitudes were similar to members of the competitive karuta club. I was so surprised with their high skill and beautiful postures. I am so excited to once again see the karuta club members grow into strong players.’
Director Norihiro Koizumi, who also directed the previous two films, commented, ‘Not only have the cast members from the first two movies, including Suzu Hirose, grown their talent over these past two years, but we also have new fabulous members. The movie Chihayafuru will come back powered up to a whole new level!’
Chihayafuru is a manga illustrating the friendship, love, and growth of high school students who are passionate towards competitive karuta. The manga series currently has 34 volumes in total. It was adapted into anime in 2011 and 2013. A live-action adaptation was released in 2016 and was split into two parts: Chihayafuru –Kami no Ku- (Chihayafuru –First Verse-) and Chihayafuru –Shimo no Ku- (Chihaya furu –Second Verse-). The sequel film Chihayafuru –Musubi- will be released in 2018.
Comment from Yuki Suetsugu
‘The sequel film will be produced, and I will get to enjoy a dream-like time again. I am just so thrilled! The movie’s scenario includes all the greatest aspects of Chihayafuru. It was so fresh and unique that I even felt jealous about it. I had the opportunity to watch the new cast members practice karuta. Their faces and attitudes were already like members of the competitive karuta club. I was so surprised at their high skill and beautiful postures. I am so excited to once again see the karuta club members grow into strong players.’
Comment from Norihiro Koizumi
‘The previous two movies, Kami no Ku and Shimo no Ku, were filmed in the summer of 2015. We have made the new movie’s setting to be two years after the previous films, just like in reality. Chihaya and the other characters are now 3rd-year students in high school. Not only have the cast members from the first two movies, including Suzu Hirose, grown more mature and talented in these past two years, but we also have new fabulous members. The movie Chihayafuru will come back, powered up to a whole new level! Every cast member, every staff member, and I, will put all of our hearts in making this movie, and we hope the movie will one day be called, “the best movie that illustrates love, sports, and the springtime of life.” Please look forward to seeing what kind of poems will be read in the movie.’
Comment from Mio Yuki (Sumire Hanano)
‘I first felt a little nervous about joining the cast for the movie’s sequel, but just like Sumire, I will always try to be cheerful, and I am looking forward to becoming a true member of the Chihayafuru team! By actually practicing karuta and watching the competitions and club activities, I have started to be charmed by karuta. Now that I have learned a lot about this game, I hope I can show everyone how unique and interesting competitive karuta is. We have not started the shooting yet, so I am really looking forward to playing Sumire and express the changes in her feelings throughout the movie!’
Comment from Hayato Sano (Akihiro Tsukuba)
‘Hi, everyone. I’m Hayato Sano, and I will be playing Akihiro Tsukuba. This was my first time experiencing the game of competitive karuta, and it was much deeper than I had thought. I was very surprised at how much concentration and physical strength is needed for playing karuta. Thanks to the professional karuta teachers who are training us, I am having a lot of fun practicing! I hope to put all my might into playing Akihiro Tsukuba without changing the Chihayafuru fans’ image of him! Please look forward to seeing the completed movie.’
Comment from Kaya Kiyohara (Iori Wagatsuma)
Hi, I am Kaya Kiyohara and I will be playing Iori Wagatsuma in the film.
I always have been a huge fan of the original manga, so I am so happy to be a part of Chihayafuru. Feeling this excitement and happiness, I will try my best to become able to grab the karuta card faster and more beautiful than any other cast member.
I hope I can blow a new wind into Chihayafuru.
I will put all my heart in playing this role, and I will appreciate all your support!
Comment by Kento Kaku (Hisashi Suou)
‘I will be playing Hisashi Suou in this new film adaptation. He is a super-talented karuta player, a Meijin, and a unique character. I am so excited to play this role. I am honored to be a part of a movie whose original manga and previous films are full of energy and faith. Although I will be joining the cast of the sequel, I hope to bring something fresh for the whole crew.’
Comment by Suzu Hirose (Chihaya Ayase)
‘About a year has passed since the surprising announcement. Now, I will like to get power from the new fabulous cast members and play Chihaya once again, who has become older and stronger. I have already received a big challenge from the director. I will treasure his words. When all the strong passions of the director, staff members, and cast members become united, I know it will create a Chihayafuru with the most beautiful red color. Please look forward to this new movie. I just can’t wait either.’
