Yoichi Takahashi’s Captain Tsubasa will come back with a new anime production. The news was revealed on 13 December 2017 during a press conference. MANGA.TOKYO was there and we’ll bring you the report at a later date, so stay tuned!
The manga tells the story of Tsubasa Oozora, who has a very special talent for soccer, and how he makes his way to the top through his battles with rivals like Genzo Wakabayashi and Kojiro Hyuga. The series began serialization in 1981 through Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump and shortly after that boomed all around the world, with several anime and movie productions following its popularity. Even after its success, the series has kept going and it has just been recently announced that a sequel called Captain Tsubasa Rising Sun will be published in Shueisha’sGrand Jump.
Yuko Sanpei has been cast as Tsubasa for this new version and Kenichi Suzumura will once again take on the role of Genzo Wakabayashi, as he did in the previous anime adaptation in 2001. In addition, Ayaka Fukuhara was cast as Taro Misaki, Mutsumi Tamura as Ryo Ishizaki, Takuya Sato as Kojiro Hyuga, and Katsuyuki Konishi as Roberto Hongo.
Directing the series will be Toshiyuki Kato (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Diamond is Unbreakable, Level E) at David Production. The story will be told from the beginning. The series will start airing in April 2018.
The announcement was supported by a first visual of Tsubasa and Wakabayashi and a teaser video. In addition, the portal website ball-ha-tomodachi.com (Ball is friend.com) was opened today.
