Sony Music Entertainment and the ILU (Institute of Language Understanding) have created a program called ‘Project Samantha,’ giving an AI version to the main characters of The Irregular at Magic High School, Tatsuya and Miyuki. You can access them on the official homepage of the movie for 17 days from 9-25 June 2017.
There will also be a group chat with the two characters, which you can access using your smartphone or computer. Also, special voice stickers of Tatsuya (VA: Yuichi Nakamura) and Miyuki (VA: Saori Hayami) will also become available.
About PROJECT Samantha
It is a joint project of Sony and ILU that enters data of various characters from anime, manga, or novels into ILU’s AI. engine K-laei, making possible to talk with some of them. In August 2016 a beta version was released, using an AI version of Maeba’s popular Batou Shojo. The Batou Shoujo AI was voiced by Marina Inoue (Iku Kasahara in Library Wars and Armin Arlelt in Attack on Titan) and was available on the illustration website pixiv for a limited period of time last summer. It became a huge hit, with many people asking for its return.
In the case of the AI versions of Tatsuya and Miyuki, they have improved the performance of K-laei, so that texts with direct and indirect intention could be used. The things the AI can understand has increased from 100,000 to 120,000 things, and the algorithm to control semantic co-occurrence, which is the backbone of understanding language, was also improved.
To be able to talk to your favorite anime character seems like a dream! If Tatsuya talks only with you, Miyuki will get jealous and interrupt him. It’ll be fun to find out what kinds of reactions they can give.
