The 10th Seiyu Awards ceremony was held on March 12th at the Bunka Housou Media Plus Hall in Tokyo’s Minatoku district. Some of the most popular and hardest working voice actors were selected to receive these awards.
The highlight of the evening, however, was the naming of multiple recipients for both the male and female Supporting Actor and Newcomer categories. The Supporting Actor category had two male and two female recipients, while the Newcomer category had three of each. This year’s Seiyu Awards reflected the recently rising popularity of anime both on TV and in movie theaters. Part of the stated objective of the Awards was to simultaneously raise awareness for the voice actors involved in the making of these increasingly popular anime.
Suzumura Kenichi and Hosoya Yoshimaki were both awarded the Best Supporting Actor award. Both are popular and hardworking veterans of the anime scene. Both have also held leading roles, but their standout work as supporting characters in 2015 left the bigger impression. Suzumura Keiichi played roles such as Iyami in Osomatsu-kun and Shingo in Prison School, displaying his ability to handle some very different characters. Hosoya Yoshimaki played such characters as Daryun in The Heroic Legend of Arslan, and Oruga in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. He leaves a strong impression with these ‘big brother’ type roles.
In the Supporting Female Actor category, Ito Shizuka and Hayami Saori walked away with the honors. These two have also starred in numerous lead roles, but their supporting performances outshined their leads. Ito Shizuka has played characters with strong personalities, including Bitch Sensei in Assassination Classroom and Meiko in Prison School. Hayami Saori has played Ononoki Yotsui in Owarimonogatari and Ogasawara Haruka in Sound! Euphonium.
The Best Male Newcomer category featured three winners: Umehara Yuichiro, Takeuchi Shunsuke, and Murase Ayumu. All three have played major roles despite their youth. Umehara Yuichiro has played a lead role as Hazama Kuro in Young Black Jack, as well as Mitsuhide in Snow White with the Red Hair, and Yujin in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans. Takeuchi Shunsuke, only 18 years old, produced The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls. Murase Ayumu, despite having just won an award for Best Newcomer, is already a familiar face to anime fans. His signature work is as Hinata Shoyo in Haikyu!!. He is also widely known for his work as Alan in Thunderbirds Are Go.
The Best Female Newcomer category also had three winners. Uesaka Sumre has voiced Hoshino Kikko in Concrete Revolutio: Superhuman Phantasmagoria and Fubuki in Kantai Collection. She is not only a voice actress, but also works as musical artist and as a creator. Takahashi Rie’s name also grew substantially in 2015. She has taken on challenge after challenge in big roles such as Miki in School-Live!, and Ichinose Futaba in Seiyu’s Life!. Tanaka Aimi’s excellent work as Umaru in the successful Himouto! Umaru-chan has also brought her name to the forefront.
2015 saw the rise of many young voice actors. The fact that six awards were given to Newcomers is a testament to this.
