We conducted an interview with Tomori Kusunoki (Hazuki Kagimura) and Rie Suegara (Shizuka Tsuchimikado), who portray characters from the currently-airing anime series Märchen Mädchen. They had just finished recording the first episode, and we asked them about how they felt about it and about the development of the series.
Märchen Mädchen centers on Hazuki Kagimura who’s often lost in imaginary worlds of stories and books, forgetting about reality (a condition she refers to as ‘Story Syndrome’). After encountering a girl named Shizuka Tsuchimikado, Hazuki wonders in Kuzunoha Women’s Magic Academy and starts her new school life as a ‘mädchen’, a girl who is selected by ‘Original’, a book of magic.
It’s a typical story in the magical girl genre and Kusunoki expressed her excitement of portraying Hazuki, ‘I always loved magical girl fantasy stories from my childhood, so I was really excited to play Hazuki’s role.’ Suegara agreed with Kusunoki, saying, ‘I think us voice actors commonly have a love for fantasy worlds.’
Remembering her recording for Episode 1, Kusunoki expressed her feelings with ‘I feel as if Hazuki encouraged me to play her.’ She continued to tell us her thoughts on Hazuki, ‘She’s mean to be shy and has a problem with communicating others. However, my impression of her is that she is positive, mentally strong, and has an ability to take action.’
Suegara told about Shizuka, ‘Shizuka feels her responsibility strongly and pressures herself because she was born into a celebrated family. On the other hand, she has her girlish side which is appropriate for her age.’ She continued to reveal her opinion on Shizuka, ‘I think she let out her girlish side which she usually concealed, and showed her bewilderment when she encountered Hazuki.’
Kusunoki confessed her behind-the-scenes story, ‘The scream from Hazuki when she accelerated came out unintentionally. At first, I was just shouting normally, but they asked me to scream more desperately. I hesitated a bit but decided to give my all to render her seriousness. I overcame my shyness and screamed desperately. That’s where the “O-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra-ra!” came from.’ [laugh] Suegara praised Kusunoki’s scream, ‘Her acting with all her heart and soul was truly impressive. I felt as if I were watching Hazuki in the studio. Although it was our first recording, she put everything on it.’
Suegara told regarding the development of the story, ‘I can’t wait for the time when Hazuki transforms. Qazan transformed in Episode 1, so I’m looking forward to watching how each character transforms.’ Kusunoki agreed, ‘It’s so exciting!’
Lastly, they sent messages to the characters they portray. Kusunoki said, ‘Although you don’t have confidence in yourself at this moment, you’ll be fine if you carry on what you are doing now. You met wonderful people in Episode 1. Please cherish the connections hereafter.’ Suegara followed saying, ‘Let’s do our best together until the final episode. I want you to make out with Hazuki soon!’ [laugh]
The story of the original TV anime Märchen Mädchen has just begun. I have high expectations for how the story will develop and how Hazuki and Shizuka will play active roles.
