Akihabara is a district worth exploring, especially for otaku people, with so many shops and cafés. In this article, I’m going to show you a must-visit place on your first visit to Akihabara.
There are so many collaboration cafés (cafés which have a tie-up with anime and games) in Akihabara. Don’t hesitate to visit one of them, as they are all very welcoming. Among them, I recommend you visit the Gundam Café Akihabara for their rich variety of dishes which are tasty and fun to look at.
Everything about Gundam: The Official Café with a Store!
Gundam Café Akihabara is the official café of the legendary Mobile Suit Gundam series. You can enjoy not only Gundam-themed food and drink, but you can also buy Gundam merch. This Holy Land for Gundam fans is situated just beside the Denkigai (Electric Town) exit in Akihabara station. Come out the exit, and you’ll find the café on your right. Look out for the iconic V shaped antenna at the entrance to the café. Don’t forget to take a photo with the 1:12 scale Gundam figure before entering the café.
Gundam Café, Here I come!
Café staff members in the familiar Earth Federation uniform welcomed me with a smile. They aren’t here all the time, so I considered myself a lucky customer. After greeting them, I entered the café space. I felt like I was in ‘White Base’ because of its cool, clean interior design.
Time was slipping away while watching the successive openings of different Gundam series on the monitor. I also enjoyed watching people coming and going at the Akihabara station square from a seat at the counter.
A Bar with an Adult Atmosphere at Night
The café transforms into a bar at night, and you can enjoy alcoholic drinks. Needless to say, you should look around every corner in the café/bar. There are collections of figures and autographs of directors and voice actors from the series on display. You even can find a Gundam figure on the bar counter.
Food and drinks in the café/bar are all Gundam-themed. I recommend the Gundam Café latte with Gundam latte art, which gives you a great Instagram photo opportunity.
From Staple Dishes to a Limited-Time Menu
The Gundam Café serves coffee which is brewed from coffee beans from the area in South America where Jaburo (the headquarters of the Earth Federation) is situated. No wonder ‘Jaburo Coffee’ has been popular since the store’s opening. It goes really well with the staple dish ‘Gundam Curry’, a delicious butter chicken white curry with an irresistible smell of grilled cheese.
Apart from ‘Gundam Curry’ there are two more curry dishes, mild ‘Acguy Curry’ and the three-times-hotter ‘Char Zaku Curry’. These three popular curry dishes all look and taste great! For those who fancy Japanese dishes, why not try ‘Waltfeld’s Kitsune Udon’ (A thick udon noodle and fried tofu in broth). If you are into Mexican mood, I recommend the ‘Tekkadan Plate’ (Mexican one-plate dish with tacos).
There are limited-time-only menu items tied up with particular series, so if you are lucky enough to see them, try some to avoid disappointment. It might not be there next time you visit.
Pay A Visit to Gundam themed … Toilet!
When you are in the Gundam café, you must visit its restrooms. They are not only Gundam inspired, but also have fun gimmicks. In the men’s compartment, when you push the flush button, the compartment gets dark, and the Gundam’s eyes on the wall glow. For the ladies’ compartment, there is a Zeon coat of Arms on the red wall. When you push a flush button, you can hear the sound of a mobile suit in action. Don’t let your guard down even in a toilet!
NB: I obtained special permission to take a photo in the restroom.
New Items are Rolling in at the Store
Check out the Mobile Suit-shaped custard-filled taiyaki, and a green tea cup with Gihren Zabi’s famous speech printed on. They make good souvenirs from Japan as well. Large-sized mugs are also selling like crazy.
Gundam Café Akihabara is must-visit place for Gundam fans. It offers a variety of food and drinks, which are reasonably priced. It’s conveniently situated in front of the station, so you can casually drop in the café without reservation, just like any other café, as much as you like while you are staying in Japan.
