Welcome to the creators’ intro, where MANGA.TOKYO introduces creators that are active in Japan and interviews them. Here we will ask them many things we are curious about, like what it took for them to become a creator.
This time we interviewed Heart, who is active as an illustrator for trading cards and light novels. How is Heart approaching his attractive illustrations? Let’s ask him!
Questions for the Creator!
Q. Is there a reason you wanted to become an illustrator?
Heart: ‘To be honest, it wasn’t my goal to become one. I might say it like that, making it sound like I didn’t think of becoming one even though it was my biggest goal. I’m not being humble if I say that my illustrations where nowhere good enough to get compliments as an illustrator, but I liked to draw and kept doing it as a hobby so you could say my dream has been fulfilled.’
Q. How long did you practice until you drew pictures you yourself were content with?
Heart: ‘I am still waiting for that day. Sometimes I will think “That’s a rare good one!” and “This is drawn well!” but soon I would look back and find something I don’t like, try to fix it…and it starts again. Practice…I never thought of it like that, I just drew everyday and taught myself new things.
Q. Is there an illustrator you admire or whose work you follow?
Heart: ‘Akira Toriyama. And I am following many illustrators, For example the relatively new illustrators Fly (@flyco_) and Noco (@noco00).’
Q. Were you inspired by any work or experiences?
Heart: ‘There are many, like Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Street Fighter. The works that changed my life are Duel Masters and Inazuma Eleven.
And if we talk about experiences, I clearly remember getting praised for my art when I was a child by my grandmother.’
Q. Is there anything special you pay attention to, to create better illustrations?
Heart: ‘I pay attention to many things, not only limited to pictures. Because inspiration for a picture can be anywhere. But I am in general a curious person, so isn’t it more of a hobby?’
Q. Please say something to the young people overseas who want to become illustrators.
Heart: ‘I think there is also a variety of talent when it comes to drawing pictures. I just don’t think talent is enough. A picture is made up of many elements, and many of them can be perfected through practice. There is a saying in Japan, which I always keep in mind: What one likes, one will do well.’
Heart likes drawing and kept doing it everyday and as a result, he is where he is now. The most difficult thing is to keep something up. But if you carry enough ambition and keep practicing like Heart, it seems to be the first step in the right direction.
We are looking forward to more work from Heart!
