A light rain chills the roof top of the hospital building. Satoru glares at Yashiro and tells him that his memories are fully back. Yashiro doesn’t seem to be surprised. This means that Yashiro knew it. Knowing everything and calculating all the possibilities, Yashiro had set up a trap.
Yashiro lays out Satoru’s crime scenario; Satoru’s new little friend, Kumi’s bone marrow transplant operation is today. Her IV is spiked with muscle relaxers, which will kill her once the liquid goes into her body. All the evidences are traced back to Satoru. Yashiro will finish off Satoru and fool general public to think that Satoru killed himself due to the guilt of murdering a small children.
Check mate…? Is everything over?
No, it is Satoru who quietly claims his victory. Suddenly, Satoru starts driving his wheelchair toward the edge of the roof top, to the railings, and now, his wheelchair skids off the fence…
Yashiro grabs the wheelchair, narrowly preventing it from sliding down the building wall. Yashiro confesses. He feels alive just because Satoru lives in this world.
He admits his true feelings. And he loosens his fingers that were tightly wrapped around Satoru’s wheelchair. Yashiro lets Satoru go, off the roof top, into midair. And then, Yashiro prepares himself to throw him off the roof, too.
He looks down below and sees Satoru, smiling back at him, lying on the emergency rescue mattresses surrounded by his friends.
Talk about satisfaction! Well done, grand finale!
The last episode illustrated the modified version of the year 2003 where past tragic events had been contained before they had occurred.
After I watched the previous episode I was expecting that the show ends in Yashiro’ arrest or death. I absolutely didn’t see this ending coming.
In one of the scenes where Kenya offers his help: “If you are trying to fight alone, take us with you.” Aww Kenya! You’re the man!
Satoru comes face to face with Yashiro, who, drops all the pretenses and reveals his crazed maniac self. Satoru fights back with his exceptional analysis and projection ability. At this point it’s impossible to guess who wins and what is going to happen next.
At one point, Yashiro reveals his plan to murder the little girl whom Satoru met during the hospitalization only to frame Satoru as the murderer. He’s a heel, absolutely corrupted. He murdered many more of Satoru’s friends in the past (well, in one of the past scenarios), it is only natural that Satoru loathes this serial killer. But he doesn’t, what he chose instead, is to seek a way to save him even if it means to fake his own death.
Yashiro seems to suffer internal dilemma quite a lot. In one scene he is resisting his impulse to kill Satoru, and in other, he saves Satoru’s life. Toward the end of the episode, Yashiro chooses to release Satoru and his wheelchair off the air. Watching the scene I was up-to-hear, to curse the horrible ending. I’m glad I didn’t, because, Satoru obviously planned to fall off from the roof top.
For Satoru key scenes and dialogues with the characters continue to foreshadow. Especially that Yashiro lured Satoru in the past and the current situation with Kumi-chan are intricately entangled.
After Yashiro had killed Kumi-chan he would make it look like it was Satoru who had killed killed her. But before that he wanted to be alone with Satoru and ask him how he had helped the kids he was about to murder in the past.
With the following remark by Satoru ‘You can’t kill me’, the foreshadowing that Yashiro needs Satoru to feel alive gets revealed.
The fact that Satoru is having a phone call with Kenya while uncovering all the evil things Yashiro did, makes Satoru and Kenya, the scene where he talks with Hiromi as well the reunion with Kayo thekey points.
The mystery of when his memories had returned gets solved as the moment when he touched Kayo’s baby.
After having watched the entire episode, I realized that the show title “Erased – Boku dake ga inai machi (translation: the town in which only I am nonexistent)” and the episode subtitle “gifts” are linked.
It doesn’t mean people are happy because Satoru removed himself from the history. It’s the opposite; during that time Satoru’s life literally stopped in time, his friends went to fundraising for him. Other studied hard to become a doctor. The time Satoru stopped existing actually triggered people to do something significantly meaningful. Missing something important is inevitable in one’s life. I figured that much in this final episode.
Several years have past since Satoru has awaken, it is 2010. Satoru has become a successful manga artist. He goes to a reunion party one night, and really appreciates the time with his friends.
This scene is extra moving because, he wouldn’t have the same experience in his alternative life which is filled with those lives that he was unable to save.
The ending theme song runs softly behind the graphics. “It’s just like a small light (Sore Wa Chisa Na Hikari No Yona)” sunk to the pit of my stomach. All the time, I was under the impression that the song is dedicated to Airi and Kayo. But today, I feel like the lyrics could apply to Yashiro.
In the last scene of the episode, Satoru wants a short break from his manga work, and steps outside into a snowy town. He walks takes cover under a bridge, and, a figure of a person jumps into his sight. It is Airi… the person who had originally created an opportunity for him to produce more than one versions of history. In the scenario he lives in now, it’s is the first time they meet, so, of course she doesn’t know who Satoru is.
I couldn’t help hoping their paths would cross again, and hopefully, get closer.
This is the last episode of the show. Except the intense scene between Satoru and Yashiro, you may be easily moved or get emotional, so, be careful not to cry your eyes out.
