Durarara!!×2 “Ketsu” – Episode 29 Review
The subtitle is “Lost in the Dark”
The phrase “Lost in the Dark” is a Japanese proverb, which means that one has lost his or her way in the dark. It also signifies a status of mind where one is unable to make a good judgement when the heart is not in the right place.
The previous episode ends with the surprising arrival of Kasane Kujiragi at the Celty and Shinra’s condo. With the couple in front of her, Kasane shows a surprising move.
The 29th episode opens with this unsettling event but the craziness doesn’t end there, it gets worse! Let me show you some highlights from the outrageous round.
Synopsis of the 29th Episode
The door opens. Who’s there? It’s Kasane Kujiragi. Huh? Celty and Shinra are both taken a back. Kasane surprised the couple even more with an abrupt and unexpected behavior right after her entering the room. On the other hand, the fight between Masaomi and Chikage comes to an unanticipated ending, due to the third person’s intervention – Ran Izumi. At the same time, Varona, the girl who has stolen
Celty’s head from the police’s possession, is on the run. While she continues to escape, she keeps questioning herself, mystified by her own change of heart.
Celty Gone Mad
The unsettling event bursts out at the very beginning of this episode. Kasane visits Celty and Shinra, and abruptly kisses Shinra on his lips. No one expected this craziness.
“Huh? A thief? Adultery? Kiss? Saika…?”
Stuned, Celty is unable to process the scene in front of her. Things quickly got worse, Kasane’s Saika slushes Shinra. Completely lost in rage, Celty turns into a black mass and attacks Kasane. Celty appears to have lost all reasons and emotions. Only her instinct drives her now in the form of swirling black fume. Kasane hoists Shinra’s body and runs into a dark corner of Ikebukuro. While tactfully dodging Celty’s attacks, Kasane successfully drops Shinra’s body into Varona’s hands. Celty gives chase to Kasane, who, spreads Saika between buildings like a net. Celty is eventually trapped in this net.
This Celty vs Kasane’s action scene is incredible. I was equally amazed with the fact that Celty turned into the shapeless black fume. Under normal circumstances, she is the one, among all the Durarara characters, who upholds highest ethical standards. But, she strips down to nothing but her instinct, having lost all the reasons and even emotions – all because of love.
Varona receives a request from Kasane to steal Celty’s head and carry Shinra’s body. As Varona drives her car with the captivated Shinra in the back seat, she continues a personal monologue with herself, and comes to the realization that she is not her old self any more.
Varona states that she has never loved anyone. However, after having come to the town of Ikebukuro, she met Shizuo, which triggered to change her way of seeing or feeling things in many ways. As she shared more time with Shizuo, a sense of happiness began growing inside of her, which, is totally different from the euphoria she had used to have during battle. Shizuo left her life at one point. This meant the end of Varona’s peaceful daily life. She realizes now that she’s feeling a sense of loneliness, a sense of being lost, and these are all coming from… her longing for Shizuo.
In this scene, she admits to herself that she loves him. It’s too late now, she thinks. Ah, this is so sad. I really felt that she deserves happiness. Varona and Shizuo. They should find themselves happy together. Right?
How did you enjoy the outrageous 29th episode? Let’s look forward to the next round!
