Hi there, I’m yukipapapa, the writer.
This episode illuminates Bakugou’s emotional transitions. I want to keep reporting on his development as a man and life-long friend/foe of our main character, Deku. I also want to touch on their classmates’ special abilities, demonstrated in this round. Alright? Let’s look at this episode together.
Highlight 1: Bakugou’s Damaged Self-Esteem. He Sticks Up to Himself!
In the previous episode, Bakugou and his classmate Iida were paired up to complete the assignment. The team’s goal was to win the mock battle, however, Bakugou acted on his own personal agenda. He focused on beating up Deku only, and demonstrated a fierce one-on-one battle. Yes, he won, in terms of beating up the opponent. Deku severely injured himself beyond repair. As a team, though, Deku outsmarted Bakugou and Iida, bringing a triumph to him and Ochako. Deku’s victory comes from Deku’s extensive knowledge and years of research on Bakugou’s ability and possible counterattack. Bakugou is a perfectionist, so, his winning the battle but losing in the assignment marks a big first FAILURE on his impeccable record.
To make matters worse, Bakugou is shocked to see his fellow U.A. classmates’ high-level skills.
Todoroki’s highest ability overwhelms Bakugou. In the post-battle review, another one of the classmates, Yaoyorozu-san comments that Bakugou’s intensive short-range attack is a wrong tactic for the in-house battle situation. He is depressed. So far, Bakugou was always the first and best, but, not anymore, in this elite school.
Don’t forget. Bakugou is top hero material. Deku chases after him to tell him that Deku inherited a special ability and didn’t mean to deceive him, Bakugou admits his defeat immediately, fair, like a man.
Then he swears that he is going to win next time! Bakugou’s boundless aspiration is his most valuable quality. He might be the most volatile guy in the crowd, but, I love how straightforward and refreshing he can be! How would he develop his special skills…? I now have to add him on the watch list, on top of Deku.
Classmates Skills and Characteristics
So far, there was not much information available when it comes to Deku’s classmates, except some scenes to put spotlight on the main characters special abilities or physical abilities. However, this time, we are down at the mock battle training. The classmates have their own spots to showcase their unique abilities that they utilize during the battle, which is exciting to watch. From my own point of view, here is the list of hot rising stars:
Half cold, half-hot. Todoroki has a large-scale ability to freeze everything, even an entire multi-story building! As one of the classmates mentioned, it could be the strongest special ability to have.
As soon as he steps into the building, two arm-like tenticles stretch out from the cape he is wearing. The name of his ability is unknown, but, that twisted, dark feature, mixed with his somber characteristics comes out pretty cool.
She can produce acid. She rides on the fluids like a surfer, pretty neat to watch.
Deku Finds His Space
Deku has always been in the shadow, went unnoticed, but, in this class at UA high school, his classmates watched Deku putting a good fight against Bakugou, and give him praises and respects, saying that Deku is passionate. My heart swells with proud! I feel like Deku is my kid! Seriously! I want to congratulate Deku for his good job, for curving out his pace in the school that he aspired to belong to. It’s a huge achievement.
A storm is coming … that’s what I feel about the next episode. Will we see a battle that is even more firerce than we have ever seen? Let’s keep watching!
