“Rage, You Damn Nerd”
Hello there, I’m Yukipapapa, the writer. Deku’s high school life starts; Right from the beginning, he places at the bottom of the class in the physical assessment. Uh-oh. Uncool… But, on the bright side, Deku fits well with his classmates. His childhood friend Bakugou doesn’t like that. Two boys’ friend-and-foe relationship gets a lot of spotlight this time. Their relationship is one of the important overarching elements of the show, so, I’m going to keep a firm grip on the subject moving along. All right, let’s look at this episode.
Highlight 1: Demo Battle – Deku VS Bakugou
The top rated hero All Might joins as the instructor of a special curriculum. His first lesson is an indoor one-on-one simulation battle. The students get paired up and fight. Deku’s partner is none other than Bakugou… Really. This is not going to go without trouble.
Bakugou and Deku engage in a mock battle. Right off the butt, Bakugou makes a surprise attack on Deku, who suffers a non-crucial damage, and to everyone’s surprise, Deku delivers a counter-attack! It turns out that Deku has studied Bakugou’s moves and abilities in advance. “I logged in my analysis book all of the heroes that I admire.” Deku’s respect to Bakugou’s ability caused him to acquire knowledge and countermeasures even before the battle began. Deku is still unable to control his power in full scale, and ranks the worst in PE test, but, he is not second to Bakugou in terms of wisdom and quick thinking.
Bakugou is furious that he allowed lessor Deku to deliver an attack. Being always the winner and leader of the pack, he sees Deku’s counterattack as a personal insult. His pride just can’t allow the battle to end like this.
Their battle becomes unpredictable and… yeah! Rocking! When I originally read this scene in the printed comic version, I fell hard for this anime. Embrace yourself for an emotional, dramatic, unpredictable battle that you have never seen before. Don’t miss it!
Highlight 2: A Variety of Student Hero Costumes
As a preparation for the simulation battle, the high school has already designed students hero costumes. Each student receives his/her own customized costume. They get to send their requests in advance, and the school arranged the production of these costumes. The products come in wide range of varieties, in terms of functions and appearances.
For example, Iida-kun chose a helmet and road bike theme. His costume is mechanical and highly engineered.
Ochako-chan seems to have chosen a gravity and space ship; her costume reminds me of a space suit. Mmm cute!
My personal favorite and recommendation for you to pay special attention to is… ta-da! Yaoyorozu-san! It really suits her gorgeous body. It’s hard to keep your eyes off it.
Highlight 3: Deku’s Growth and Bakugou’s Pride in Stalk Contrast
Ever since the childhood, and all the way up to the physical assessment in the last week’s episode, Bakugou kept bashing Deku for not having a special ability. But, things are different now. Bakugou learned that Deku is now equipped with the special ability.
For Bakugou, Deku has always been the lesser being who feeds his self-assurance and authority over the others. Naturally, he doesn’t like Deku becoming stronger and better to level with him. Deku’s existence starts intensifying his frustration that he can’t get rid of.
On the other hand, Deku begins sticking up for himself, even if he is still shaky or scared. Encouraged by Ochako-chan’s complement on his nickname, Deku (a derogatory term in Japanese), he even confronts with Bakugou.
“Deku is not for defective anymore! Deku is for, go for it, because I say so!”
This scene highlights the personal growth of Deku, who demonstrates a strength to come face to face with his long-time friend who symbolizes his hero complex.
In the next week, we can expect to see even more fierce battle of the team Bakugou & Iida. Bakugou is going be nastier than ever. How will Deku the burgeoning hero handle the frictions? Let’s keep watching.
