Hello! It’s Yukipapapa, the writer. In this episode, All Might and Deku’s mentor-mentee relationship is illustrated. Deep. Honest. Perfect. I cried my eyes again! New characters of similar age join this time, expanding the story even more. Now, let’s look at episode 3.
Episode 3 Roaring muscle
“You can be a hero.”
All Might discovered a potential in Deku (Izuku Midoriya) to become a true hero, who acted on his guts to try help his childhood friend from being swallowed by a dark monster. All Might is aware that Deku doesn’t have a special ability, and suggests that he bestows his own, to Deku. His special ability is called “One For All” – it is a crystalized power handed down to multiple heroes over generations.
Now, Deku works hard to enroll in the U.A. High School, the institution that gives Deku the best chance to become a hero. While preparing for the high school entrance test, Deku agrees to participate in the training designed by All Might, which Deku finds ridiculously tough beyond his imagination.
Highlight 1: All Might’s Successor Deku
All Might appoints Deku as his successor, and suggests passing on his power to Deku. He designs a special training for Deku to build up physical strength, which turns out to be extremely hard and meticulous; the training menu stipulates how long Deku needs to sleep, and what he eats.
Deku accepts the challenge. He works out day in day out. Even the season shifts and weather changes, Deku doesn’t slow down. Sometimes he is in tears. Sometimes he is drenched with sweat. At one point, he throws up. His unflagging resolve demonstrates how seriously he wants to be a hero. At last, he completes the entire assigned training menu. He looks up at the sky and bawls. This scene gave me goosebumps. Yeah man! Great! The visual is not the only thing that grabs you.
Pay attention to those quote-worthy moving dialogues.
All Might: “A hero is essentially a service worker. Sometimes people don’t notice your work, but, you must work hard do a good job no matter what.”
He’s not only giving a physical training. He mentors on the philosophy on heroism. If I were to have a coach, it gotta be someone like All Might, my dream coach.
Deku: “Entering school is not enough. I got to work twice or more than other guys do, to be on the same level with them. Because I want to be the best of the best, like you All Might.”
Here, Deku is saying that he’s not riding his luck that rolls into his way unexpectedly. He’s going above and beyond, trying to link the luck to even bigger success. He is tenacious. I would say that alone could be his special ability that he’s borne with. I love this guy. I definitely want to root for him, a man of impenetrable determination.
All Might: “There is a fundamental difference between things that come to your way by pure luck and things that are bestowed to you because you are qualified. This, is your own power that you won.”
This phrase speaks to the volume that All Might respects Deku as his successor. I feel that All Might also tries to boost Deku’s self-esteem with positive affirmation. Deku is extremely introvert and meek, otherwise. I sense the depth of humanity in All Might’s action. If I ever had a mentor, I would definitely want to have a mentor like All Might…!
Highlight 2: A Future Classmate?
At the U.A. High School entrance exam. Two new characters appear for the first time, who, obviously become Deku’s classmates. First up, a cute and cheerful girl named Ochako Uraraka. The voice actor is Ayane Sakura, who’s known for her previous work like Nonnonbiyori and Charlotte. The character Ochako has a relaxed and friendly charm. The voice performance definitely accentuates the character design and image. Yay!
The second new character is tense and straight-A type guy named Tenya Iida. The voice actor is Kaito Ishikawa, who worked in Owarino Seraf and Haikyuu!! He accurately projects the character’s energetic passion. Again, good job! These two will likely to have more screen time moving forward.
As the ending of this episode illustrates, the entrance exam is the main part of the show in the next episode. Can Deku successfully demonstrate the power he has received from All Might? Can Deku pass the test? Ohhh exciting stuff!
