Episode 07 When the Cat’s Away, The Mice Will Play Mischief
Seeing the stuffed penguin, Mitsumune had a flashback. Tokimune was brisk, while Mitsumune was sluggish. An abandoned factory, a stuffed penguin, and Tokimune falling off from the wall to death. Their mother who could not accept his death. Mitsumune ended up starting his life as Tokimune…
Meanwhile in the village, they realized that the monsters were all their mental hangups. As Mikage suggested that Masaki was the one who brought in all the monsters, the rest of the members agreed to find Masaki to confront her.
Mitsumune’s past was revealed.
The stuffed penguin belonged to his twin brother, Tokimune, who died young.
He fell off from the wall and died. His mother was so shocked that she started calling Mitsumune Tokimune, and Mitsumune had to live his life as Tokimune. Even his father called him Tokimune.
Mitsumune’s presence was abandoned by his own family, and even at school. He had lost his own identity, couldn’t tell who he was or why he existed any more. His biggest motivation to join this tour was to literally start over his life as “Mitsumune”.
As he has confessed his handle name being his real name, he might be trying to convince himself that he is “Mitsumune”. He probably felt his presence was finally recognized when Masaki complimented him on his name. He has had such a sad situation.
Masaki cheered him up and invited him to the tunnel, saying he could go back to his old world by passing it through. But she also warned that he had to fight himself to go through the tunnel.
It seems that “to fight himself” means to get over his own psychic trauma. All the monsters the others saw were apparently their traumas. You cannot go back to your old world unless you get over it. The others chose to live in this village over going back to their old world. Apparently, psychic trauma is not something easy to get over with. Even Mitsumune couldn’t face his and chose to ran away from it.
The mysteries have been unveiled one after another, but new ones are also added. What does the old world mean? Is it the world Mitsumune and the others used to live in? Or is it a completely different world? Masaki’s true identity is not clear yet, nor this village. What would the tour members think when all the truths are revealed to them? Would they find happiness? This show is completely unpredictable.
