Episode 09 Commercial
Hibiki came to the inconveniently located Kumade Shrine and called out for Natsu, “Bear, are you home?” While complaining, she came all the way to return Natsu his book. Behind Natsu, there were loud voices of the villagers coming from the shrine room. Apparently, fired-up Yoshio was enthusiastically conducting another village revitalization meeting. The theme they had for the meeting this time was “Commercial”, and they decided to shoot one to promote the village with all the villagers…
Is this supposed to be a metaphor or simile to the modern media industry? It’s hidden in the dark, you can’t act against the sponsors!
The partly revealed “village revitalization meeting” and Yoshio’s mysterious plan (though he may have more than just this one) are now clear to us.
The story was about shooting a TV commercial to promote the village, involving the whole village, but ended up getting all the credit stolen by a sponsor at the end.
The outcome was somehow expectable enough by the end of the first half, and it kept me really frustrated till the very end.
Maybe I had felt as nervous as the mastermind, Yoshio, during the wait for the 30 seconds commercial ad, feeling really scared of the others being disappointed or angry at the outcome, because I saw everyone being really excited and enjoyed the shooting together.
However, the villagers were all happy and excited about them appearing on TV or being able to hear their voices. I was completely fooled at their out of the box reactions, but also relieved for them being typical unconventional Kumade villagers at the same time.
This episode really showed the anime’s staff’s favoritism or fetish on glasses and the school bathing suit.
Hibiki recommended Machi to dress as “a cute miko (or shrine maiden)”, but she ended up wearing a school bathing suit out of blue, dancing in it.
It’s an extremely rare sight in various ways, including the clothing.
I laughed at Natsu for bringing Machi’s bathing suit as something so natural.
The school bathing suit was cute, but allow me to say something stiff. I kind of think that it would have been a better advertisement if Machi danced in a see-through miko outfit like Matsu-san suggested.
The highlights of this episode are Natsu continuing to film with his video camera, Machi’s school bathing suit, and most of all, Hibiki’s high-five with Yoshio after a chopping hand on his head.
Its exquisite flow was incredibly sweet!!
Moreover, Hibiki showed her earnestness by joining the shooting while saying she wasn’t interested and yelling angrily at Yoshio for the outcome before anything. I fell in love with her again!
It felt like a bit unsatisfactory to have not enough interactions between the bear and miko this time, but instead it showed us many characters with different moves to make it feel like full of contents.
It also made the audience realize how Kumade village is appealing to us and gave us their subtle charm.
It made me want to eat Nameko and apples in Kumade village.
