Episode 3 Summary

The Koutetsujou made it out, leaving Aragane station behind, and is now headed for the shogun’s greatest stronghold, Kongoukaku (lit. Diamond vallum). Meanwhile, the passengers started internal conflicts, wanting Ikoma and Mumei out for being Kabaneri. While expected to take the leadership in haste, Ayame isn’t up to manage the conflicts…

Review

Ikoma managed to get on the Koutetsujou, but suffers persecution as expected, creating simmering tension.
In addition, Mumei, another Kabaneri, fans the flames, making the situation even worse.
Mumei shows her mettle that she would fight humans if necessary. Why doesn’t she interact friendly with other people? It must be easy for her to win people’s trust by protecting them with her distinctive physical ability as a Kabaneri, but she behaves as if she wasn’t interested in building a good relationship with others. Why does she have such an attitude that could generate frictions? Her philosophy may be an important key to the whole story.

It is unveiled that Kabaneri live on human blood.
They are a hybrid of human and Kabane, but their diet is closer to that of a Kabane. How could humans possibly accept beings who live on human blood, when they had already refused to accept Kabaneri, even before learning about their diet, who were showing their intelligence and self-control? It only helps the humans to gain a deeper awareness of them being monsters. How are they going to fill the gap? To begin with, Mumei is not even showing interests in filling the gap. How is Ikoma, as another Kabaneri, going to face her and how is he going to deal with the humans? Ikoma appears to be the only potential character that could help starting a mutual understanding between humans and Kabaneri. His actions should be a driving force to change their relations dramatically.

Kabaneri residing in between humans and monsters brings the human egocentrism to light.
Generally speaking, ex-human beings are basically the subject of persecutions. Kabaneri are no exception and are persecuted by inconsiderate humans.
Humans feel they have to persecute Kabaneri as a threatening presence closer to monsters, because they want to defend their own lives and habitat, even though Kabaneri are being as rational and intelligent with a strong sense of themselves and behaving just the same as humans do. Humans are apparently scared that Kabaneri may turn into a human enemy in the future, and they can’t help their fear and end up persecuting them.
This show tells us a story which exposes the human sin of persecuting the inapprehensive.

Will the day come when Kabaneri and humans can settle their differences and make peace? I have to keep a watchful eye on Kabaneri depicting human egos.
