Turnabout Sisters First Trial
The beginner lawyer Ryuichi Naruhodou is invited to have a meal with the senior partner of the law firm that he works for. Her name is Chihiro Ayasato. Her younger sister, Mayoi, joins too. Chihiro asked her sister to pick up an evidence from her office and hold on to it for a while, until she needs it in her ongoing trial. Naruhodou shows up at the appointment time. He steps into Chihiro’s office and to his absolute surprise, finds Chihiro’s corpse. He spots Mayoi near the body, looking scared and utterly shaken. In a rush response to the 911 emergency call, a detective named Keisuke Itonokogiri arrives at the scene, and quickly determines that Mayoi is the murderer. She’s arrested on the spot. The lawyer named Hoshikage agrees to defend Mayoi, but, Naruhodou starts realizing that someone powerful and influential in a shady business world is pulling the strings behind the scenes.
It is April 5th, the time is 9:27 in the morning. Chihiro Ayasato, the senior partner of Ayasato Law Office, makes a phone call to her younger sister, Mayoi Ayasato. Chihiro asks Mayoi to briefly take possession of an evidence that she uses in her ongoing trial. Chihiro is talking about a table clock that looks like the Rodin’s Thinker sculpture. She hollowed out the clock mechanism inside the structure and then stuffed the cavity with a bundle of documents that she needs for the trial to come soon. Chihiro asks Mayoi to come pick it up at her office at nine in the evening tonight. She hangs up the phone, and invites her novice lawyer coworker, Naruhodou, to join her at the dinner.
In the evening, at 9:08pm exact, Naruhodou comes back to the office after having finished up his work. He notices that the building is dark and lights are off. As he opens the door of Chihiro’s office, he wonders why decorative plants are lying on the floor, and glass pieces are scattered all over the floor. Then he sees it – Chihiro’s body, still and motionless, showing no sign of life. A blood-covered Thinker sculpture clock lays on her side. Mayoi is leaning on the plant and apparently scared sick. At the scene, one detective and several police officers rush in. The detective’s name is Keisuke Itonokogiri. He responded to an emergency call. Near the corpse, a piece of receipt is found. On the back of the piece of paper, in blood, the letters read “Mayoi.” Itonokogiri determines that Mayoi is the murderer and takes her to the police office.
Next day, Naruhodou visits Mayoi in jail. She explains to Naruhodou that she pursues a psychic medium as an occupation, and, the day her sister was murdered, Mayoi agreed to pick up an evidence from Chihiro. Apparently the evidence has something to do with Chihiro’s upcoming case. Mayoi further explains that she recorded Chihiro and her conversation on her cell phone, but, she has misplaced the phone. And then, she asks Naruhodou to get a hold of a lawyer named Soranosuke Hoshikage, because, Chihiro had instructed Mayoi a while ago that she should always ask help from this person if anything happens to her. Naruhodou isn’t very thrilled with the news, but, he wants to help. He seeks and talks to Hoshikage and explains the situation. Hoshikage quickly agrees to help and defend Mayoi.
Back to the Ayasato law firm, Naruhodou spots Mayoi’s missing cell phone. It is wedged between a double-pane plant cover. He confirms that Mayoi and Chihiro’s conversation about the evidence is recorded on this cell phone. Meanwhile, Naruhodou receives a visit from the detective, Itonokogiri, who announces that the prosecuter assigned to this murder investigation is Reiji Mitsurugi. Naruhodou knows that name. Mitsurugi is famous for having attained the prosecutor position when he was only 20-year old, and he has never lost a case ever since. He’s a prodigy. Itonokogiri tries to lead Naruhodou’s attention away from the case, but, Naruhodou successfully plies of some more information about the witness. Naruhodou sets off to talk to an individual named Umeyo Shouchiku, who apparently claimed that she has watched the entire incident from her room at the Bando Hotel.
Naruhodou sneaks into Umeyo’s hotel room in the Bando Hotel. There, he finds a cuff button, and, a wiretapping device. Out of the blue, Umeyo comes out of the bath room. Naruhodou jumps up and runs off. Later that day, the lawyer Hoshikage calls Naruhodou, to resign himself from Mayoi’s defending lawyer position. Naruhodou figures out that someone pressured Hoshikage to back out, and it is someone who’s authoritative in underground world, because, Hoshikage warned him – There is no chance to find someone to defend Mayoi, so, give up.
Naruhodou has a flashback. When he was an elementary school student, he was wrongfully accused of stealing lunch money and he was isolated in the class.
He hates the idea of leaving Mayoi in an isolated spot like he has experienced. He just can’t let that happen. He decides that he volunteers to be Mayoi’s defense attorney, knowing that he is stepping into something dangerous.
