Episode 5 Summary
“Murder on D Street”
The Detective Agency easily repelled Port Mafia’s military squad, “Kurotokage/The Black Lizard”. As Kunikida feared for “the worst case scenario”, the employees were busy cleaning up the mess after the failed raid. Meanwhile, Atsushi was ordered to accompany Ranpo’s investigation. The supposedly “famous detective”, Ranpo, dumbfounded Atsushi a bit for his lack of common sense that he didn’t even know how to take a train. After meeting up with the police detective, Minoura, and seeing the victim’s body at the crime scene, Ranpo started bragging that he could solve this case within a minute…
This episode focused on Ranpo Edogawa, another member of the Detective Agency. Being the only “detective” in the agency, he has “Super Deduction”, the ability to solve tough cases in a blink of an eye. His ability and outfit is quite convincing because the author, Ranpo Edogawa, who existed in real life, was known for his well-written detective stories.
Ranpo is respected by the other members of the agency, and even Kunikida treats him very politely. But Atsushi didn’t understand why Ranpo was so respected, as Ranpo showed his selfish nature and attitudes along with his favorite motto, “All is well that works well for me”. Atsushi followed Ranpo while having his suspicions aroused.
Ranpo is so outspoken that he even called the police at the crime scene incompetent. Dazai, who happened to be there at the scene, joined in the investigation of this murder case.
Then, Ranpo spotted the perpetrator in a moment, by his ability “Super Deduction”. Not only spotting the perpetrator, but he also pierced the mystery of where the victim had been murdered, what kind of conversation the perpetrator and the victim had had right before the murder in detail, to impress Atsushi with his brilliant ability.
However, it is unveiled that Ranpo does not have an ability later. Ranpo is one of the unique and normal members of the agency without any kind of special abilities. Ranpo acts as if he had a special ability, but the truth is that his remarkable keen brain and observation skill made him look like one with a special ability.
Despite being a normal person without an ability, he can cope with others with abilities by his own keen brain and observing eye. Atsushi is now convinced why the other members of the agency recognize him with so much respect.
Ranpo with such a despotic manner is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya. He acts out the peculiar innocent nature in the spiteful attitudes of this character so smoothly. A serious aspect of Ranpo is also shown fully at the deduction scene. I’m anticipating future appearances of Ranpo voiced by this popular voice actor, wondering what different aspect of his will be shown to us the next time.
This episode revealed the Detective Agency’s job description partly and Ranpo’s ability. Will the Port Mafia appear in the next episode? I can’t wait.
