Tuesday is now officially, my favorite day! And I know you guys are loving this day as well!
Let start without further ado, Episode 02 of Mob Psycho 100 is very interesting. And because it is interesting, we fans are happy because we feel that the time we spent watching it isn’t wasted! That’s the essence for today’s episode as our protagonist, Mob-kun is try to relish his middle school life to the fullest! As the proverb says, “Time is gold”, but in Mob-kun’s case, we’re gonna slightly flex it into “I want to experience something worthwhile” and with that prospect in mind, Mob-kun’s finally spearheading his story on a new pace!
The episode started with the usual gag combo. Reigen the Fake Psychic, in his spiritual agency discussing, or more like convincing his client that he is cursed. Of course, the obvious reaction of the client is to doubt Reigen’s hocus pocus because it’s indeed nothing but a scammer’s plot to dwindle some Fukuzawa Yukichi bills out of his wallet! But as aforementioned in the past Mob article, Reigen is no simple fraud. He’s vastly well-versed in a lot of things, and using his superior knowledge, he magnificently turned the client’s doubts into a source of income which Mob-kun benefits 300 yen per hour! Goodness, Reigen’s a genius!
After that, we’re on to the takoyaki scene where Mob-kun ponders and initiates a rare discussion with his master. Their topic is no other than Mob-kun’s wanting to spend his time on middle-school-ish events rather than doing some assistant role in exorcisms. In this segment, we get to see Reigen being an actual “nekojita”, one who cannot handle hot foods and drinks and some of Mob-kun’s power and his control over it. But let’s go back to their topic in question…
And so our kid hero wants to have a fulfilling puberty days and that’s the normal thing for his age! Based on his lines, I reckon he thought of it very carefully, in his own way. But unfortunately for him again, Reigen inserts another one of his good-for-nothing lectures and quickly converts Mob-kun’s perspective that the psychic wonderboy is bound to do supernatural things rather than spend his pre-adult days in a mundane fashion. So for now, their heart-to-heart discussion is stalled and Reigen’s smooth-talking saves his arse again!
Don’t go anywhere yet as we’re only halfway this week’s review.
Moving on, we get to meet some new characters! In Mob-kun’s Salt Middle School, a part of the episode focused on a certain school club, the Telepathy Club being ran by, yeah, weirdos. As one of their members resigning so suddenly, they were instantly confronted by the school’s uptight student body deputy president telling them that their paradise, a.k.a Telepathy club is going to be abolished should they fail to introduce one member before the set deadline.
Now, entering the spotlight is Kurata Tome, this week’s heroine! A hardboiled, avid and diehard fan of the supernatural skill called telepathy. As the head honcho of her club being comprised by low-level creeps, she felt the greatest desire to protect her paradise and ordered her army to find one person to join their wacky squad.
And so, after over a hundred rejections and being called “creepy” by almost half of the respondents, by some strange twist of fate, comes Mob-kun, who was referred by an acquaintance who coincidentally, is a bona fide member of the Creep, I mean, Telepathy Club. Given his pushover vibes, Mob-kun was easily sucked into a situation he didn’t deserved to be in. While we was being pestered to join the club, he decided to confer with his esteemed mentor, Reigen, for advice and like we expect, Reigen swiftly offers Mob-kun the straightforward directions to reject the club’s offer.
The second half of the show showcased Mob’s psychic power as he was forced to trespass an all-lady’s school in a gruesome disguise to meet their clients. After successfully getting the job’s details from his doubtful clients, Mob-kun easily exacted his master’s order, to eliminate the culprit behind the case.
After the deed, the once doubtful clients were actually very impressed. There was even a short segment where a girl blushed in awe, but frankly, I doubt that girl knows Mob was a boy in disguise. Sorry, shoujo-ai fans! It’s not gonna happen.
After the battle segment, the final minutes of the episode was a lull. Back to the Telepathy Club, Mob-kun appears to have agreed to join Tome-chan’s army as he only needs to sign the entry form. But ONE’s humor formula hits its stride again and blasting into the scenes were the rigid student body deputy president along with the Body Improvement Club, the new club who’ll take shelter on the previous Telepathy Club’s room. Well, they look bulky and tough, a total 360° contrast to the wimps of Telepathy Club.
With the time ticking, Mob-kun was again thrown into the hot seat as he was being questioned by the deputy president, who’s trying his hardest to make Mob-kun realize the mistake he’s about to commit.
Query after query, Mob-kun was obliged to reminisce some of his childhood memory about the time he’s trying to impress his childhood crush, Tsubomi-chan, who’ll get more commentary in the latter reviews. After realizing what he’s suppose to do, Mob-kun didn’t think twice and dove head first, bowed while declaring…
“Please let me join you… Body Improvement Club.”
So, did you folks enjoyed this episode? Eh, me? Yours truly has been laughing from start to finish. I’ve even had teary eyes from the gags this show has to offer, it’s really that hilarious!
