Hello folks! It has been a long ride but here we are, at the end. Yet another anime has come to its end, and probably will never get a second season. In Japan, anime is a sort of advertisement for the original product, be it manga, light novel or visual novel. Hence sometimes you get such anime like Fukigen na Mononokean, that give you questions but never actually answer them. It is to draw your attention to the original product. But anyway, let us talk about the last episode and this anime as a whole.

Fukigen na Mononokean was one of those light-hearted and easy-going anime that you get every once in a while, and luckily it stayed the same till the very end. You might have thought that since the main topic of the anime were youkai, that is creatures from another world, the story might have taken a bit of a darker route. That is also what I thought at the beginning. However despite my guesses, this anime managed to keep its style, so to say preserve it till the end. Fukigen na Mononokean is definitely a show you can watch on a rainy day, when you are not in a good mood and feel down, because this anime will smile and laugh wholeheartedly for sure! That was probably the best feature of this anime, but sadly the only one. At least for me.

The last episode managed to resolve the issue with Hanae’s loss of youkai-vision, but it was not a satisfying solution, nor a satisfying ending for the anime. At the end we see Abeno talking to Mononokean about Aoi (the previous owner of Mononokean), but we still have zero clue who in the world Aoi is, or where they might be, what has happened to them, how did Abeno, a human become the owner of the Mononokean. Either way, I won’t tell you the episode in detail, go watch it and you’ll see for yourself! 🙂

Now back to business. The whole anime had a very unsatisfying air floating about, starting somewhere around episode 4 or 5. It is not an easy deed to pull an episodic anime and come up with something half-decent. This one at least managed to keep the wholeness of the atmosphere in the show, which I must tell you, is still a job done well.

The main issue I had with Fukigen na Mononokean is the very subtle, almost non-existent character development. Obviously we got to observe the most development with the main characters, that is Ashiya and Abeno. But the show introduced us to several secondary characters, like Zenko, Yahiko, Rippo, and others. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any character development on their side, which indeed is a pity.

Despite the story, the animation and the soundtrack were pretty good. The soundtrack is written by Yoshiharu Takahashi (Naruto, Fairy Tale, Mononoke, etc.), who usually ends up writing very enchanting, ethnic and touching music. It was a nice complimentary for the show. As for the animation, most of the time it was your average animation, but changed to something unique when the characters moved to the Underworld. I have noticed that many anime picture the Underworld completely different from the real world and that is a very interesting move to make. The Underworld in Fukigen na Mononokean was colourful, cheerful and full of interesting scenery.

But as it is, the ride is over, the anime didn’t leave a huge impression, yet nonetheless it was a good watch and if you want something on the average level to keep you busy while you’re having your lunch, or trying to get your desk sorted, or even looking for something to watch before going to sleep, then believe me my friend, this is one of the must-watch series. It’s warm and bright mood will also enlighten your room and light up the atmosphere.

Fukigen na Mononokean was a sweet anime. The main characters were able to grow to a degree, come to terms with some of their issues, and lastly accept their own feelings. Seeing Abeno try his best to bring back Hanae’s ability was pretty sweet, and seeing him bowing to Hanae and asking him to come back and work at Mononokean yet once more was quite touching. Yet again, if we get another season I’m sure that their relationship wouldn’t change even a bit. Even so, a huge ice wall between these two has melted and it will help them become better friends and companions in the future.
