The story begins with a man walking slowly in the heavy rain. For a second there, I thought he was an old man because he was crooked and lacked of the energy. I mean, who would walk slowly in the rain if he’s capable of running? However, when a lady told the “old man” that there’s a letter addressed to “Angelo Lacuza”, he suddenly ran down from the stairs and snatched the letter, nothing like an old man. Then I realized: this guy is a young man. On top of that, he is the main protagonist! Impressive way of debut, Avilio!
Angelo Lacuza is the main protagonist’s actual name. However, he is now known as Avilio Bruno, a weird loner who stays in a rugged room. Judging by the wallet pile under his bed, he probably makes a living by pickpocketing, unless he has a quirk hobby of collecting wallets under his bed.
The first scene is a silent and dull one, with only the monotonous sound of rainfall. Avilio showed no emotion or feelings at all, as if he couldn’t care less about the world, including himself (since he didn’t worry about catching a cold in the rain). However, when the letter reminded him of “Vanetti”, his detached face suddenly showed a smile, a creepy one under the flash of lightning. You can easily imagine how much hatred he has towards the Vanetti family because his lifeless face actually “brightened up” with just the thought of “Vanetti”.
The story then goes back to Avilio’s childhood, explaining why Avilio hates the Vanettis so much. Apparently, the Vanettis killed his parents and younger brother, Luce, in front of him on his birthday. Yes, on his BIRTHDAY! That’s why he can never forgive, or forget, the Vanettis (since he’ll be reminded annually). This part of the story does not only explain about the story between Avilio and the Vanettis, it also tells you a bit of Avilio’s calm yet daring personality, which is quite essential if you want to revenge on someone, I guess.
Interestingly, Nero Vanettis was the one who spotted young Avilio running into the woods and he fired his gun after some hesitations. Of course, Avilio wasn’t killed there but he managed to get away unharmed…… Did Nero let him go purposely? On top of that, who was the third person squatting next to the car while Nero shot at Avilio? Can these be some important details which may affect the development of the story in the future? Let’s wait and see……
7 years after of the incidence, Avilio received a mysterious letter and returned to Lawless. His childhood friend Colteo, who took care of him at the night of the incidence and swore to be his brother, is now a private bootlegger (someone who manufactures and sells alcoholic liquor illegally). The Orco family, rival of the Vanettis, tried to “persuade” him to sell them his liquor. However, Colteo turned them down because he didn’t like mafias. When things turned ugly, Avilio showed up and saved him. Avilio urged Colteo to sell his nice liquor to mafias too. Colteo was surprised to hear that from him but he agreed to help because Avilio mentioned about their friendship and “brotherhood”. Nice and cunning, Avilio!
Avilio and Colteo went to a bar, which used to be a church, to sell their liquor. There were two men trying to sell their liquor to the owner too before they arrived. From the owner, we know that the Orco family currently controlled all the routes over the border. In other words, the Orco family controlled the importation of the liquors too. In this case, Colteo’s delicious “home-made” liquor (or what they called “bathtub gin”) becomes even more precious and valuable.
Somehow, the two men, who wanted to sell their liquor, were interested in buying Colteo’s liquor. While they were making a deal, Fango from the Orco family joined the party, asking for Nero. I must say, Fango is an important character here. This funny yet insane character has brilliantly added a little bit of humor touch into the serious atmosphere, without spoiling the tension. The scene even got heated up when Fango assumed Colteo was Nero, who stole the Orco’s liquor. Avilio managed to save Colteo, again, but they ended up triggering Fargo’s “insane switch” and made him started shooting insanely.
Surprisingly, Avilio and Colteo stopped Fargo with some bottles of “liquor attack” and they fled with the two men who wanted to buy Colteo’s liquor. While they were driving away from the scene, Avilio wanted to know whether Nero was actually at the pub.
And the answer is: Yes, he was……
This is only the 1st episode and it already developed a nice tension there. Can’t wait to see how the story goes next!
