It’s confirmed guys, this anime is just a giant Saga advert and we love it. It’s amazing how Zombie Land Saga is so unpredictable every week. They just prove again and again that you can still make original and god damn entertaining comedy without repeating the same tropes and clichés.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 君の心にナイスバード SAGA
After ruining their chances of getting a budget with the pharmaceutical company, the girls perform in a commercial for the fried chicken restaurant Drive-In Tori, which ends up raising slightly their idol image. Later, the girls participate in the Kashima Gatalympics while wearing promotional Franchouchou T-shirts as a publicity stunt. But after the first round, they are completely covered in mud and cannot wash it because their human makeup would come off as well, which ruins their self-advertisement. Tae manages to win first prize and Sakura remembers making her wear two layers of T-shirts and tells her to remove her muddy clothes but unfortunately it was only just a Drive-In Tori t-shirt. Meanwhile, a man recognizes Junko after viewing the Drive-In Tori commercial and decides to investigate her.
Kotaro can seduce everyone: When Tae-chan starts eating raw chicken, Kotaro tries to distract the Drive-In Tori CEO and he pulls the same charming act as he did with the pharmaceutical lady. ‘Shall we discuss the details of the shoot?’ And the best part is, that it seems to be working, with the CEO blushing and all.
The girls now react to his bullshit: I love that every time Kotaro comes up with a different idea and dresses up from the whole briefing, the girls now respond to his ‘bullying’. When the Drive-In Tori commercial was brought up, we was doing some baseball references and ‘home runs’ Saki, but then she just grabs the ball and throws it back at his leg. God, that looked painful and excruciating. Later, when he comes in with his French beret and baguette trying to act all Parisian, he goes to Ai and say ‘Bonjour, Saga jeune!’ then he irritates her and she grabs the baguette and slaps him in the head. I love this series so much.
The jumping Tarzan rope: It was so nice to see every girl offering a different ‘performance’ that suited her character while challenging the jumping rope. Legendary Tae-chan killed it though. I laughed so much with the girls’ faces when they run in order to put her pieces back together and not let anyone realize that she is an undead zombie.
Themes & Trivia
Everything is real: The Drive-In Tori franchise is an actual business in Saga, and the CEO in the anime is actually voiced by the original CEO of the company, Takayuki Arure. This idea crossed my mind when I heard him talking but I just thought that the seiyuu tried to make it more believable. In any case, including him in the show was truly a brilliant idea. They even posted a picture of him on Twitter holding the Zombie Land Saga script. It seems that they even based the design for the character off the actual person as well. Can I also mention that the opening footage was an actual commercial for the company? You can see the full version here.
The voice actresses of Zombie Land Saga took part in Kashima Gatalympics: The Kashima Gatalympics is an event held in the mudflats of the Ariake Sea off Kashima city in Saga. The event takes place every year at the end of May. The Gatalympics are a series of fun-filled competitions that take place on the mudflats. Participants compete in unique silly, game-show type contests, where they become covered with mud. And the best thing is that Kawase Maki (Junko), Rika Kinugawa (Yugiri), and Minami Tanaka (Lily) took part for real while wearing the promotional T-shirts of Franchouchou. I have so much respect for them right now. You can check the footage here.
‘When is the job?’ Right now. *both start screaming* I am starting to love the dynamics between Kotaro and Saki, and generally the whole group seems to be nicely flowing with each other’s characters.
In this episode, water actually works properly and the idea of waterproof makeup that I thought was happening in the hot spring story was so wrong. Plus, the police guy was in this one so everything felt like it was in place, no complaints whatsoever.
There seems to be some plot happening after all. It will be interesting to see if that guy is going to find out the idol’s previous lives and try to make everyone believe that they are real zombies or something. I am intrigued!
