This episode of Zombie Land Saga, was like watching a playthrough of the Yakuza video game series. Needless to say that it was as legendary. Also, the title above is shortened. The whole title is: Though My Life May Have Ended Once by Some Twist of Fate I Have Risen, and If Song and Dance Are to Be My Fate, Then Carrying the Memories of My Comrades in My Heart as I Sally Forth Shall Be My SAGA
Japanese Original Episode Title: 一度は尽きたこの命 なんの因果か蘇り 歌い踊るが宿命なら 親友への想いを胸に秘め 貫くまでよ己の SAGA
Franchouchou tries to attract the elderly population of Saga by practicing together the kashima dance. While they are having a break, Saki stops an argument between the members of Franchouchou and the remnants of her former biker gang, Dorami, whose current leader, Maria Amabuki, is the daughter of her best friend and former Dorami boss Reiko Kirishima, who retired from the gang for a normal married life. Later on, Maria is challenged by the rival gang Korosuke to a race towards a cliff at Kagamiyama, where Saki died while doing the same challenge back in 1997. Knowing about the dangers of the challenge, Saki rushes to the location and takes Maria’s place using Reiko’s motorcycle, which she destroys in an explosion once more after jumping over the cliff. She returns to them unscathed, but Reiko punches and scolds her for her recklessness, which makes Maria respect her mother’s awesomeness once more. In the end, Franchouchou celebrate Reiko and Maria’s reconciliation by performing an idol concert for both gangs.
Tatsumi, Saki-chan fell out: At this point, Kotaro looks more like their dad than their manager. The whole car scene made me think that they were a huge family going for a Sunday picnic in the park or something. Later on, when he actually scolds Saki for interacting with humans outside the group’s activities and then warning her at the mansion’s door, god damn he could actually do a good job as their manager if he was always there for them. Plus, he even followed her with the van, in case shit got wrong (that mispronounced ‘Music, come on’ line killed me). Kotaro is actually a pretty cool guy.
Saki’s past: I thought it would have much more fighting and blood but at the end of the day it was as nostalgic as it should have been. Their hairstyles, their clothes, the bikes and of course the tamagochi gave everything a bit of a 90s pop boy band feel.
Is that Moltres? At the beginning I thought that girl’s hairstyle was the Moltres Pokémon or a phoenix but after revaluating the situation I realized it’s the bloody Drive-In Tori mascot that they were all so obsessed about. Nice bird.
Themes & Trivia
The kashima dance: Kashima Odori (or Kashima Dance) started when people wished for recovery from the flood disaster of 1962. The dance consists of three pieces of music, ‘Kashima Issei Buryu,’ ‘Kashima Bushi,’ and ‘Kashima Kouta.’ Everyone in the city participates in the dance, and the city is immersed in the feverish excitement and shouts of the dance.
Kyushu Pottery Villages: During the intermission screen, the girls are holding some pottery items, saying ‘Arita, Imari, and Karatsu’. These three villages are located in the Saga prefecture just a few hours from the main city of Fukuoka and they are the three most renowned villages to see ceramic experts and beautiful pottery work. Pottery has been produced in these Kyushu villages for hundreds of years. The art has been passed down from generation to generation and they have some of the most exquisite designs that are not available to purchase anywhere else in the world.
To be completely honest, I thought that Saki was actually the boss of her gang and not the second in command. Nevertheless, the fact that she got so much guts to relive the scene of her own death makes her so badass. I am actually lost for words. Especially if you compare her way of dying with the tragic deaths of the other girls so far, it’s kind of admirable to see her willing to relive that, just to save her best friend’s daughter (and advertise Franchouchou to the gangs and ‘underworld’ of Saga).
From the amount of episodes that are left, I think that the next stories will be all about Yugiri, Tae and finally Sakura. Will we learn anything more shocking than we have already? Let’s wait and find out.
