The girls gave a ‘shocking’ performance in Saga Rock and despite all the drama and the unfavorable weather, they still prevailed.
Japanese Original Episode Title: けれどゾンビメンタル SAGA
Even after all the attempts of the girls to make Junko come back, she still refuses to practice for their Saga Rock performance and locks herself away. Ai, on the other hand, is practicing very hard for the performance and is even willing to cover Junko’s part of their duet for the new song. One day before the show, Kotaro talks to Junko and assures her than she doesn’t need to follow the modern standards of the idol industry and just keep being herself, which convinces her to rejoin the group. During their performance in Saga Rock, a thunderstorm strikes, making Ai break down and unable to sing properly. Junko supports her and helps her overcome her fear but in the middle of their performance the whole stage is actually struck by lightning which illuminates their bodies and auto-tunes their voices. The audience and media are impressed by these effects, and Franchouchou are reported as Saga Rock’s next big idol group.
Kotaro is seriously the best: He killed me in this episode. He had so many glorious moments that made me burst out laughing. First of all, when Sakura goes to him for advice he yells back at her: ‘Figure it out yourself, you damn zombie!’, then when he goes to talk to Junko and breaks the door down as she holds resistance to it: ‘Zombies are supposed to be on the other side of the barricades!’ and the final yet superb quote of this episode: ‘When you’ve found your nerve, open that box. And fix the door.’ Also, his face when he hits Junko with the car is just hilarious. I honestly couldn’t stop myself from laughing during his scenes.
Finally, they are waterproof: I have been waiting for an explanation for this since Episode 3 and I was putting my money on waterproof makeup but Zombie Land Saga has surpassed itself one again. Kotaro is using waterproof spray for shoes in order to make their makeup stay put. I have no words for his genius anymore.
Tae can speak now? She is getting more and more sentient as the episodes go by. I wonder if we will have an epic revelation of her real character at the end of the show where she will be the most glamourous and elegant girl out of the whole group or something.
The lightning was basically auto-tune: So they are trying to say, that people actually thought that their electrified voices and illuminating bodies were part of the performance? Especially after what happened with Ai, I think that they shouldn’t have idols performing on stage at all when there is a thunderstorm, but oh well.
Themes & Trivia
Cygames: During the intermission screens, we see the girls showing the new building of Cygames, which is a Japanese video game development studio established in 2011 by CyberAgent. I don’t know if they established their company somewhere in Saga or not, but this show definitely tries to advertise them in a way.
Growing mushrooms trope: So if you have been watching anime for a while, you might have noticed that a lot of characters start growing mushrooms on their heads when they are sad, the same way Junko did when she locked herself away (in her case I think they take it more literally since she is a zombie and all). Here are some examples from Ouran Host Club and Fullmetal Alchemist. This is probably based on the fact that mushrooms grow in dark and moist places. Exactly the kind of environment depressed characters are visually and mentally put into.
Am I the only one that was expecting the metal music from the opening scene to start playing in the background when Kotaro hit Junko with the car? Even for some seconds, just for the lols. Even though, they didn’t put it in, Sakura saying that she is having a déjà vu of the scene was equally satisfying to watch.
And fix the door.
I really want to learn the backstories from the rest of the girls and especially the story behind Kotaro and the way he ‘recruited’ them. If you think about it, most bodies in Japan get cremated after death, so I am rather curious to see how this evil genius managed to get his hands on their bodies.
