Zombie Land Saga is probably the most interesting idol anime I have ever watched. Despite its shameless Saga promotion and overall goofiness, this anime has a super intriguing plot and I will be quite sad to see it end next week.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 世界にひとつだけの SAGA
Sakura wakes up after being hit by the truck and ends up losing her memories of being a zombie on top of regaining her old ones. Reliving the same horror of realizing that she is a zombie, the girls are trying to explain the situation and cheer her up but the ‘real’ Sakura seems to be very pessimistic and believes that she cannot make it as an idol and will only slow them down. Ai and the girls try to reason with her, but fail and Sakura leaves the house. Contemplating about her life and recalling how every attempt at trying hard at something in life led to something going wrong, including her death, Sakura is found by Kotaro who remains determined to help her achieve her dreams and not give up on her.
Ai’s reaction: When Sakura wakes up and sees all the girls as zombies, she basically replays the scene from Episode 1. And if you don’t remember, she actually stabbed Ai in the head with that thing next to the fireplace, So that’s why Ai freaked out when she was holding it in her hand. Nice callback.
Policeman A is back: He is back once more saying exactly the same things as he is always saying: ‘Did you run away from home, did you have a fight with your boyfriend or is it teenage angst?’ And then he is hit in the head by a baseball. Poor guy, having to do the night shifts must be hard for him.
Yugiri the final boss: I loved the scene of the girls trying to motivate and reason with Sakura and each one of them failing and going back to bed crying. Then Yugiri goes in, dressed up all fabulous but Sakura was already gone. I wonder how many spins her head would do if Yugiri slapped her instead of Saki…
Kotaro is the best: Once again, his reactions to everything was pure gold. Returning home seeing the girls in the front door and saying: ‘What the hell is going on? Why are you all awake waiting for me?’ or when he talks with Sakura and says: ‘You think I was done? I am not going to go along with your negative spiral, you moron!’ and then my favorite out of them all: ‘You know I have this… big… impressive thing!’ What exactly are you implying there Kotaro? Even though Sakura is undead, she is still underage…
Themes & Trivia
Kotaro and the bartender are older than they look: Okay, the bar scene seems to be of great significance for the story behind Kotaro and Yugiri. First of all we are introduced to the bartender guy who seems to be the one that helped Kotaro turn the girls into zombies and who implies that he owns a lot to Yugiri from back in the day. So, hint number one is the bar’s name ‘New Jofuku’; hint number two, are the pictures inside the bar; hint number three is the reference from Yamamoto Jocho’s Hagakure. So the first two hints reference to Xu Fu, a court sorcerer in Qin Dynasty China where he was sent to the eastern seas twice to look for the elixir of life. And to further support this, we have the paintings in the bar which are in fact real pictures from his statue and tomb. So, it is safe to assume that the bartender is Xu Fu and he has zombiefied himself and probably Kotaro with the ‘elixir of life’ and helped him bring the girls back to life in order to ‘save Saga’.
Now, regarding hint number three, Yamamoto Tsunetomo or Jocho was a samurai of the Saga Domain and Hagakure (meaning Hidden by the Leaves or hidden leaves), is a practical and spiritual guide for a warrior, drawn from his collection of commentaries. Even the sake that Kotaro drinks in the intermission screen references to the Nabeshima clan, a Japanese samurai kin group. Now, I know that I might sound crazy but can it be that Kotaro is a samurai from the old times and that’s why he wants to save Saga so badly?
Did anyone else realize that they actually added more sound effects in this episode’s opening? When I heard the zombies’ growling I honestly thought that a wild dog has entered my house. Plus you can hear jumping sounds and other effects when Kotaro is dancing, the sound of the girls walking in high heels as well as hearing him sing along with them by the end of the song. So many nice polished details. This anime is honestly a treat!
Shall I try slapping her?
With the next episode being the last one, I am afraid that we won’t be able to get all the answers that we are seeking for but nevertheless, this has been amazing so far, so I am sure the finale will be as awesome as expected.
