Trinity Seven is an anime based on a manga by Kenji Saito (story) and Akinari Nao (art) which is currently being serialized in Kadokawa’s Monthly Dragon Age. The first TV anime series aired in Japan in October 2014 and was followed by a movie in February 2017. Three years later in March 2019, the anime released a movie sequel with the title Trinity Seven: Tenkuu Toshokan to Shinku no Maou (Trinity Seven: Heavens Library & Crimson Lord). It was produced by the same staff members and the screenplay was written by Kenji Saito. The first movie had hinted on a sequel, and now we finally get to see it.
The story starts when 17-year-old Arata Kasuga awakes as a demon lord candidate. When his cousin and childhood friend Hijiri vanishes into a world of nothing, Arata decides to become a mage to save her. To do so, he enrolls at the Royal Biblia Academy, where he meets seven beautiful and powerful Mages known as the Trinity Seven. Will he be able to solve the world’s mysteries with his powers as a demon lord and a mage?
One of Arata’s abilities is to control the surrounding magic, so he can forcibly remove the Magus Mode of other people. However, those who are directly hit by his ability will find themselves naked. Even though Arata is a very serious and earnest guy, he is also a pervert. No matter the situation, his head is filled with perverted fantasies. At least they don’t have any effect on his composure. He hopes to create a world in which not only the Trinity Seven but everybody can live with a smile on their face.
The movie shows Arata getting his hands on the sealed weapon Black Imperial Sword Judecca. While Arata and the others were investigating the empty area which used to be Akio Fugo’s hometown, they are suddenly transferred to the Sky Library. Standing before them is Abyss Trinity, the Crimson Magic King. He had been sealed in the Sky Library but the seal was broken in response to Arata and his demon lord ability. On top of that, his daughter is Lilith of the Trinity Seven. Abyss’ intention is to regain his power as a demon and destroy the whole world. The key to his plan is Lilith, who gets kidnapped by Abyss since Arata and the other’s don’t have the power to beat him. The only thing that can help them now is the Black Imperial Sword Judecca, but if he uses it, Arata would completely turn into a demon lord. Controlling magic or having your magic controlled? How will Arata face this ordeal?
Even though some time has passed since the last movie, the animation and feeling of the anime hasn’t changed much. It is a sequel that doesn’t disappoint fans. Its plays out in a way we are used to, including the usual naughty scenes between Arata and the Trinity Seven. The action scenes are also satisfying. It is easy to enjoy the development and the comedy that is mixed into it. The ending of the movie is kept quite open, so this might not be the end of this series. There has been no official announcements, but there might be another sequel in the near future. I personally hope there will be one.
