Was that ‘Unravel’ in the background?! This episode was not bad but after hearing ‘Unravel’ playing and seeing Kaneki cracking his fingers, it instantly became awesome. Even though we know that Tokyo Ghoul:re is not a great production and the overall plot leaves anime-only fans with a lot of question marks it was nice of Pierrot to hype the fans with the song.
Japanese Original Episode Title: その、果てに turn
Sasaki is being beaten down heavily by Takizawa in the auction room. Meanwhile, Shirazu and Saiko are fighting with the Nutcracker where they manage to defeat her thanks to Saiko’s skills. Urie and Mutsuki are battling Big Madam but they fail to beat her and Juuzou with his squad come into play. Despite the tortures Juuzou went through when Big Madam was his owner, he is still unable to kill her and that’s when his fellow squad member steps in to finish her. Sasaki’s fight with Takizawa is being put on loudspeakers and Hinami after hearing his screams, she realizes that Sasaki is Kaneki and goes to rescue him from Takizawa. Unfortunately, she gets overpowered by him and leaves Sasaki with no other choice than to accept his inner self and let Kaneki take over.
Urie is going crazy as well: So the question here is this: Was he crazy and obsessive from the beginning or he just can’t cope with his new abilities and they are driving him mad? Whatever the case, I find his resolve lacking in so many ways and he generally fails as a character to make me empathize or feel sorry for him because well… uhm, Sasaki’s situation is way worse and more intriguing than this.
Saiko Yonebayashi: Apparently she has the best skills in the Quinx Squad but we have yet to see what her abilities are all about. She seems to be close to Sasaki and refers to him as ‘Maman’. Is that supposed to be a cute way of saying ‘mama ‘or she is just saying: ‘my man – mah man – maman’? Am I the only one noticing this?
Juuzou’s Squad: These guys look like the ultimate bros plus they can definitely kick some ass. I really liked the scene where Big Madan was starting to shit over her relationship with Juuzou and they didn’t stay still but instead ripped her to pieces while Hanbee was covering his ears so he won’t have to listen to her. It is nice to see that they have respect for him and don’t see him as a freak.
Sasaki and Kaneki: The inner conversations of these two and even in the older seasons of Kaneki and Rize are just absolutely amazing. When ‘Unravel’ was playing in the background (and its lyrics really suit the character and the situation) and Sasaki accepted Kaneki as he realized that he is not the only one that is afraid of being erased or forgotten I just wanted to start clapping for the amazingness of everything.
This might be a tiny spoiler but I think it should have been added to the episode as well:
SPOILER ALERT: Highlight if you have read Tokyo Ghoul or you don’t mind being spoiled – Big Madam is apparently male. In the manga, when she is killed, Juuzou says his final farewell and addresses her as ‘Father’. It is unclear whether she was merely cross-dressing as a disguise, as a game similar to what she did to Juuzou, or was actually a transgender woman – SPOILER END
What the hell were those sounds that the masked guy was making? It seriously made me so creeped out. And then we get the horrific screams of Sasaki… The audio in that scene really makes you uncomfortable. In general, the music in this episode was so good, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite ‘Unravel’, which might have mentioned a billion times by now, I think the background music accompanied really well the action scenes and added a certain horror to them as well.
Finally, this episode had some throwbacks and continuation from the Tokyo Ghoul √A season. It was nice to see that Hina still loves Kaneki even though things have changed so much since their last encounter. Definitely looking forward to seeing what will happen in the next episodes, especially now that we know that Kaneki will be taking control of Sasaki more. I highly doubt that the injury of Takizawa was fatal and I think that Sasaki will be leaving the Quinx Squad really soon and follow his own path like Kaneki usually does.
