Messy and weak action scenes with so many things happening simultaneously. Tokyo Ghoul:re doesn’t seem to be improving… It still leaves you confused and fails to explain anything that could make the series more easy to follow.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 散りゆく夜 Press
The Quinx squad manages to get to Mutsuki and starts fighting Tsukiyama’s assistant who recognizes Sasaki and blames him for Tsukiyama’s condition. He gets seriously injured, and to his luck, he is rescued by a mysterious ghoul named Matsumae. Takizawa the lunatic ghoul, who turns out to be the former Investigator Takizawa, slaughters an entire CCG squad while Nutcracker kills another squad with her special kagune. Urie is being asked to escort Mutsuki out of battle but decides to disobey the given orders and tricks him into going to the main hall, where they find a secret passage that leads to where all the ghouls were escaping. Joined by Suzuya, they start fighting the ghouls and later on they face Big Madam who almost kills and eats Urie. Uta starts fighting Hirako as Takizawa finds the Quinx squad and attacks Kaneki who is ordered by his superior to fight this SS rated ghoul by himself.
Takizawa: Hands down the highlight of the episode. I did not see that coming at all… who would have thought that he is the former Investigator? I thought he was just dead. Of course, no flashbacks or backstories as to what exactly happened to him and how he turned out this way. He has become seriously deranged and creepy. The ‘Give me some jam’ or ‘Jam, jam, jam, jam’ made me feel seriously uncomfortable. I think his relationship with Akira and how he was always compared to her is definitely the reason for his mental state.
Ayato and his abs: I have to admit that Ayato has grown to be overly sexy. I don’t know who is more fit at the moment, him or Sasaki? I guess we will find out pretty soon though.
Urie never learns: This guy is either going to die real soon or he will get everyone in serious trouble. He is blinded by grandeur and wants recognition so badly that he almost got eaten by Big Madam. He overestimated his powers once again and he even wants to show off more that Suzuya. Sneaky little bastard.
Character Guide: Since everything might be rather confusing for the fans that don’t follow the manga, here is a guide that will help you remember the characters and follow the events of Tokyo Ghoul:re a little bit better.
Missed plot details: First of all, when Takizawa has cornered two of the CCG members and one of them turns out to be his former student, he says that: ‘Fear is overcome when you become one of them’. There was an important flashback missed here where we see Takizawa being overwhelmed with fear during the Anteiku raid and if it was included, that scene would have made more sense.
Urie’s obsession with surpassing Takeomi is not explained properly as well. When we see Takeomi fighting the huge clown, he struggles him to death and the reason for that is because he has superhuman strength which adds up to his skills as an Investigator and that’s why Urie wants to surpass him so badly.
Uta Vs Hirako: There is obviously a lot of backstory missing here but nothing is explained to us. When Uta seemed to be unmasked, he had the same face as Arima just to tease Hirako. It is his way of toying with people’s emotions, hence the mask business and the whole clown thing.
‘Damn you and your sexy body’. When he said that to Nutcracker, it cracked me up so much. What kind of comment is that, seriously? In this episode, we were basically showcased a bunch of freaks that have evolved ghoul powers: Matsumae and his detached kagune that looks like thorns and Nutcracker and her traps of compound kagune. The following episodes will definitely be chaos.
I am quite disappointed with the quality of the animation. To be honest, I had my hopes high and really thought that this season would be better even though the plot seems to be a bit messy again but oh well… it is probably an evil master plan of Ishida to make everyone hate the anime and love the manga even more.
Takizawa has the best quotes ever, plus he is so creepy he makes me shiver. I honestly don’t know what to expect from the next episodes. Obviously, we will have intense fighting scenes but I really hope that the animation will get a bit better and that the action will keep up with our expectations.
