It’s over guys! After all the turmoil, the ups and downs of the show, Tokyo Ghoul:re is finally over and with a happy ending, of course!
Furuta and Kaneki start fighting and they begin to discuss about the various events that happened throughout the years and their ideals about the world and the people around them. Meanwhile, the CCG and Goat fight off the remaining enemies and monsters and are joined by those who were against the original idea of ghouls and humans working together: Takizawa, the White Suits, Kurona, as well as Matsuri who was supposedly missing in action. With the new forces joining in, they end up outnumbering their enemies and come to a victory. Kaneki also ends up beating Furuta while saying that even if the world is messed up and many bad things have happened to him because he met Rize, he would still take the same path, since it helped him realize who he really is. After Furuta leaves his last breath, Kaneki goes to the core of the Dragon in order to destroy it only to find out that Rize’s body was used as its energy source. After releasing her, the battle comes to an end. Six years later, Tokyo has come back to normal with humans and ghouls living peacefully amongst each other. We see Hide and everyone going to visit Kaneki, Touka, and their baby daughter while enjoying a cup of well-made coffee.
What is the deal of Furuta? My question here remains. Okay yes, we were hinted that he was at the bottom of the Washuu clan and was probably the underdog and was looked down upon but was that his reason for bringing chaos to the world? Was it maybe because of Rize’s death? Or was it because of his thirst for power? But if he was thirsty for grandeur then why did he wish for a peaceful and normal life? Was he forced by his peers to be like this and to become powerful? I have absolutely no clue about his storyline. Also, I have to add that this character has the most refreshing quotes I have heard in anime in a while. When he said that this world is ‘MAJI FUCKU!’ I literally died laughing. ‘Maji fuck’ I will start using this from now on.
How many kaguya transformations does Kaneki have? I honestly lost count by now, but seriously he seems to have even more transformations than the styles and colors of his hair. In every peak battle of each story arc he evolves even more. And then you have him saying that he is weak and cannot protect anyone…
Six years later: The final scene was a nice way to conclude the whole story. I really liked seeing Kaneki, Touka and the rest of the gang all grown up and living a normal quiet life.
Themes & Trivia
Cut out material that didn’t make in the anime: Okay, at this point you all know that Tokyo Ghoul:re doesn’t include all the details presented in the manga and ends up confusing the hell out of everyone, so here are some important things that were missed and could enlighten you more about the story’s progression:
- Furuta: Furuta’s kakuja is actually much stronger that it was portrayed and he could easily destroy Kaneki’s cross-shaped blades. He also had hallucinations of him starting a family with Rize. And since no further information about his background was presented to us, let me give you some juicy details: He was the illegitimate son of former CCG Chairman Tsuneyoshi Washuu. He was a member of the Clowns and went by the name of Souta. He also joined the Ghoul Restaurant as PG, and has been a partner in Akihiro Kanou’s ghoulification experiments. Like Kaneki, he is an artificial one-eyed ghoul who possesses Rize’s kagune.
- Enji Koma (Devil Ape) and Kaya Irimi (Black Dog) join in the final fight as well.
- Eto regenerated her head and mocked Kaiko and V.
Who is Matsuri Washuu and why is he wearing a fundoshi? So the guy with the naked butt that appears during the fight is Matsuri Washuu, a commander in Division II, and the former leader of the S2 Squad. He is the eldest son of Yoshitoki Washuu, thus a member of the Washuu Clan’s main family. After his father’s death, he was named the CCG’s acting Bureau Director. However, his position was challenged by his illegitimate uncle, Souta Washuu-Furuta, producing a succession war between the two. After an assassination attempt supervised by Kaiko, an agent of V, Matsuri is declared to be missing in action and loses his claim on leadership of the CCG.
The ‘kagome’ song: Furuta sings a song while he is reaching his end. The Kagome Kagome (かごめかごめ, or 籠目籠目) is a Japanese children’s game and the song associated with it. One player is chosen as the oni (literally demon or ogre, but similar to the concept of ‘it’ in tag) and sits blindfolded (or with their eyes covered). The other children join hands and walk in circles around the Oni while chanting the song for the game. When the song stops, the Oni tries to name the person standing directly behind them.
First of all, I have to say that Kaneki looks exactly like Allen Walker from D.Gray-man, with his white hair and eye scars. Other than that, this episode was full of great artwork moments that made me once again realize how amazing Sui Ishida is: Rize’s artwork when she was cocooned in the dragon was absolutely gorgeous and breath-taking. Also, they did a good job with the detailing in the overall episode as well, scenes like Kaneki biting the sword of Furuta while they fight and his pink eye after the fight was cool to see. And can we also mention Yomo and his pink ribbon braids while playing with baby girl Kaneki?
I will continue to choose and to be chosen.
I can’t believe that Tokyo Ghoul is over. After all my complaints and frustration while watching this show, I have to say that I am sad to see it end but at the same time super glad to not witness its poorly production anymore! What did you think of Toyo Ghoul:re? Nay or yay?
