Damn, that was a good episode. Everything was building up for this moment and even though the process of getting here was rather hasty and painful to follow, it finally worked out and things makes sense for the first time in forever.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 心覚え Morse
Kaneki and his ‘dragon’ kagune is out of control and kills everyone in its path. Furuta meets Mutsuki and tells her that the Oggai was the reason why Kaneki turned into a beast and that everything is her fault. Kanou is confronted by Kurona and before shooting himself with a gun, he confesses that people will now figure out the possibilities of using ghouls for medical purposes. The ghouls meet up with Hide and go to the CCG Headquarters in order to form an alliance and save Kaneki. After agreeing to work together, Nishino reveals to them that the only way to destroy this monster is by finding and extracting Kaneki’s body in order for the kagune to decay. Touka then remembers that she gave Kaneki her parents’ ring and suggests to use metal detectors to find his body through the massive kagune that has spread around the city. As the CCG and the ghouls work together to find his body, ‘dragon’ starts releasing monsters made from its own mass that attack everyone. The CCG fights off the monsters as the rest carry on with the search. Mutsuki then comes up to Urie and Yonebayashi blaming herself for the situation and trying to kill them but the Quinx squad talks to her, making her realize that she has been part of their ‘family’ all along.
Tsukiyama’s speech: I really liked the scene of him screaming and crying that he wants to see Kaneki happy. Mentioning how Kaneki cares so much for everyone that he can’t even live his own life was very touching and sad. Okay yes, he ended up making it funny at the end, saying that he wants to have just a small bite of him and then coming up with names for his baby, but overall it was a very sentimental scene.
Itori must be a member of the Clowns: So the reason she appeared in front of everyone was just to make them angry and harvest chaos once more? Is this a part of Furuta’s plan? Because she is definitely a member of the Clowns as well, so I don’t really get the whole reasoning behind that scene.
Ghouls and Humans united: What a great way to pass along the message that everyone is equal. Working together for the same cause will make them look through their differences and cooperate with each other. Although there a lot of things that need explanation, that scene was again very touching in a way. Especially Kotaro’s words: ‘The most important thing for an Investigator is to fight for peace not to kill ghouls’.
Mutsuki and the Quinx: My only complaint with this part of the plot is that this romance relationship between Mutsuki and Kaneki had no impact whatsoever in the show. If it was built up differently, seeing Mutsuki like this at the end of the episode and Urie with Yonebayashi trying to calm her down would have been so much more powerful and emotional.
What is the ‘Dragon’? It wasn’t properly explained in the show but basically it is a kagune (kakuja I don’t even know anymore) that was formed because the Oggai squad that has been made with Rize’s kagune gave enough nourishment to Kaneki, who ate and absorbed all of them. It is hinted by Furuta and further explained by Kanou who also mentions that’“the secrets about ghouls will now come to light’.
The way the alliance was established between humans and ghouls was just hilarious. Everyone is so serious and then Marude says: ‘Suyuza, tell us, child, are you up for this shit?’ Suzuya: ‘H-hai!’ Marude: ‘Alright, whatever, let’s do this’. Also, can we mention that the Tsukiyama family has more influence to the Prime Minister of Japan than the actual CCG? This is insane.
This episode had so many emotional moments, I don’t even know where to begin. The romance in the anime is handled in such a bad way, god damn it! I mean look at Nishio and his girlfriend, this should have made everyone cry, but most people didn’t even recognized who she was until he gave her the coffee. Unbelievable.
So far so good. I enjoy the way things have turned out and I can’t wait to see how this season of Tokyo Ghoul:re will end.
