Don’t expect to be able to understand much of what is going on if you haven’t read the manga and you want to keep watching Tokyo Ghoul:re, because they have finally done it, they made the anime impossible to follow for non-manga readers.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 白い闇 VOLT
So Ayato and Banjou manage to invade Cochlea and try to find Hinami. Kaneki walks in her cell saying to himself that he wants to save her and then be killed by Arima. Arima arrives at Cochlea as well and starts fighting Ayato. Ayato is almost killed by him but he is saved by Touka and Yomo. It is then revealed to us that Yomo is Touka and Ayato’s uncle, since their mother Hikari was his sister. Hikari was killed by Arima in the past and her husband Arata was unable to save her. In order to become stronger he became a kakuja but was eventually killed by Mado and Shinohara. It was during that time that Yomo joined Anteiku and Yoshimura. As Touka, Ayato, and Yomo fight Arima, Hinami and Kaneki come across Furuta who tries to stop them but he is defeated. Kaneki arrives just in time to save Yomo and the rest escape with Hinami as Kaneki starts fighting Arima to buy them some time. Meanwhile, Furuta and his men attack Hinami and the rest, while Eto breaks out of her cell and starts chasing him. Furuta then reveals to her that Kanou has given him Rize’s kagune and destroys Eto’s kakuja. Kaneki is losing from Arima and is badly injured. When he was about to give up he gets lost in his thoughts and sees a hallucination of Hide telling him that he has to live. After this, Kaneki destroys Arima’s quinque and refuses to kill him, which make Arima slice his own throat.
The Kirishima family: So Yomo is apparently their uncle. When they first started showing the flashback, I honestly thought that Yomo was in love with their mother Hikari, so you can imagine my face when he says ‘sister’. I was like: ‘Oops, wrong call.’
What is the deal with that guy? This guy Furuta confused the hell out of me. Who is he and why is he becoming like the main villain of the show? We had no explanation whatsoever about his situation, background, or motives. Is he part of the Washuu clan? Is he an important member of the V organization? Why the hell does he has Rize’s kagune and how can he be stronger than Eto? And on top of that he acts like some sort of insane comic relief character? With all the dramatic changes in his voice and the ‘placing tooth back in his mouth and smile’, ‘thumb attack’, ‘super peace’ shit that he does? He frustrates and disorients me.
Hinami still acts cute? All hell breaks loose and Hinami is still acting cute. When she was attacking Furuta and released her kagune, she tried to put her dress down because she was embarrassed that her naked ass might show in front of Kaneki. Girl I am sorry but GET REAL. I also don’t like how everyone acts like she is a kid, with Touka going to her pinching her cheeks and saying; ‘Baka Hinami’. I think my saltiness is starting to get out of control.
Arima Vs Kaneki: This should have been the highlight of the episode, but it was executed in such a lame way that failed to impress anyone. Everything looks and feels like this was indeed the 646th time that these guys were fighting each other and the animators were just bored out of their skulls with this scene. There was no build-up, and the fight had no flow which made everything rather uninteresting to watch. Arima’s new quinque that was used for the first time, Kaneki talking with Hide in his subconscious even Arima killing himself, had honestly no impact.
‘Nande ya nen’: When Hinami and Kaneki come across Furuta he says to them ‘Nande ya nen’ a couple of times. It means ‘You got to be kidding!’ or ‘why/what the hell?!’ and it is mainly used by the Kansai dialect in Osaka.
Eto ate some pâté: Pâté is a paste, pie or loaf consisting of a forcemeat that at least contains liver mostly found in French or Belgian cuisine. Common additions include ground meat from pork, poultry, fish or beef, fat, vegetables, herbs, spices, and either wine or brandy. Pâté can be served either hot or cold, but it is considered to develop its fullest flavor after a few days of chilling. The most famous pâté is probably pâté de foie gras, made from the livers of fattened geese.
Comments
This episode was quite disappointing for everyone. Manga readers don’t like to see everything rushed in together and badly executed in the show, and anime-only fans are so confused that are unable to follow what is going on. It honestly makes me sad to see the progression of Tokyo Ghoul, and what it has become.
I am hoping that after they manage to escape from Cochlea and the action dies out a little bit, we will get to see an episode that explains some of the things that are happening.
