And so, the continuation of Tokyo Ghoul:re, is finally here. Quite an overwhelming first episode, cutting straight to the point and once again blasting extreme amounts of new information in our faces.
Japanese Original Episode Title: そして、もう一度 Place
The CCG has discovered the base of Aogiri Tree and started their assault to annihilate them. Back into the city, Kaneki and Furuta arrest Eto’s editor in order for him to confess that Sen Takatsuki is a ghoul. In the press conference for her new book, Takatsuki reveals that she is a ghoul and that her last book is all about unity between humans and ghouls. Kaneki arrives to arrest her and takes her to Cochlea where she reveals to him that in her book lies the truth about the CCG’s leading family, who is working with a ghoul organization called ‘V’, which is the same organization that killed her mother, and that Rize Kamishiro was a ghoul who fled from V, as well as information about the Washuu Clan. V finds out that Eto is in fact the One-Eyed King and that they also found out the hideout of Orca, who was apparently Rize’s foster father and Arima locates him and kills him since he doesn’t reveal Rize’s whereabouts. In Cochlea, Nimura tries to learn from Eto the identity of the King. Eto mocks him and hints that he is also a Washuu unable to call his real father ‘father’. Eto later tells Kaneki that he must kill the One-Eyed King. As Ayato joins up with Banjou and his gang, they get ready to attack Cochlea but suddenly a riot begins and Kaneki walks into Hinami’s cell and tells her it’s time for them to leave.
What is Eto thinking? So let me get this straight. After all her efforts of destroying humanity, she decided to be captured by the CCG and let the whole world know that she is a ghoul? I think her motive here is to make the public empathize with her and create trouble once again for the CCG. Also, she let herself get captured by them just because it was the safest place to be? Nah, I highly doubt it. I think the reason why she does all this is to create more chaos with the valuable information she holds and utterly make the true One-Eyed King come out in the open. Which bring me to the next highlight of the episode:
Who is the One-Eyed King? In the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul it was implied that Yoshimura was actually the One-Eyed King, but then Eto made her appearance and we all thought that she was the one. But now, it seems to be some sort of myth about a figure that will bring hope and change, plus Eto actually asks Kaneki to kill the One-Eyed King, so that certainly means that it’s not her. Is it possible that Rize had something to do with it and is now passed to Kaneki? I am very confused.
V organization: So Arima is a bad guy after all? Why is he called the White Reaper and why do they want to kill the One-Eyed King so badly? Also, did Eto just revealed to us that Furuta is part of the Washuu Clan? And even if he is, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, god damn it?
Themes & Trivia
Dear Kafka: The title of Eto’s book is referring to Franz Kafka, a German-speaking Bohemian Jewish novelist and short story writer, widely regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature. His work, which fuses elements of realism and the fantastic, typically features isolated protagonists faced by bizarre or surrealistic predicaments and incomprehensible social-bureaucratic powers, and has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity.
King Bileygr: As it is briefly explained by Kaneki, Bileygr means: the one who lacks an eye. It actually references to the Norse God Odin, who gouged out his own eye at the Well of Mimir in exchange for knowledge. To drink from this well was said to give memories of the origins of the world and life itself.
Okay, am I the only one that thinks that Orca or Shachi or whatever his name is, looks like the samurai version of Steve Aoki? Anyone? No? Okay then…
Ah, the marvelous ‘DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE’ scenes are back. Let’s start the countdown everyone and see how many times this is going to be shown and repeated by various characters in the future episodes.
Kill the One-Eyed King.
I am quite happy to see TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, singing another song for the series. At this point, Tokyo Ghoul without his voice is just lacking quality.
