It’s Episode 3, EPISODE 3, and it made me tear up, laugh, and smile too much. This was such a good episode, focusing on the upcoming Wave that’s about to land. Are Naofumi and Raphtalia ready to take it on? My favorite episode so far but all three episodes released so far have been good, IT’S ALL SO GOOD!!
Japanese Original Title: 破局の波
Another wave is about to hit and Naofumi, grown-up Raphtalia, and the other heroes prepare themselves to fight. Naofumi still feels conflicted as to why he should save this kingdom and its people but Naofumi is shown surprisingly that there are people who believe in him.
Feisty Raphtalia: She grew up too quickly but into a bad-ass. I couldn’t believe the turnaround in her personality, as she is now confident and fearless. It just makes me love her even more; this girl will not be trampled on ever again.
Jerk Other Heroes: Super awkward when Naofumi was reunited with the other heroes especially Motoyasu and Malty. They still look down Naofumi as trash. I said this before in my Episode 1 review that the other heroes were not likable. I get the feeling now you’re supposed to hate these other heroes and put your full focus going onto Naofumi. And yeah, I HATE THEM!! You could feel in that scene how much Naofumi probably wanted to tear them apart but he holds himself back. Like he has been doing this whole time so far.
Unsure Selflessness: During this episode I felt I got to see more of the internal struggle Naofumi has had from Episode 1. Asking such questions as: why save these people? This kingdom? Still he chooses to save the village and villagers being a distraction. This ongoing unsure feeling of selflessness is killing him inside and yet he could go all rogue ass-hole. But remains to do what he was brought to do into the world: save it.
Strong Shield Hero: Naofumi, as this series protagonist, is just perfect for it. I find fascinating to think what move he will make next. Going up against the zombies and other monsters, he showed off how much he’s grown already, his skills, and how quick thinking Naofumi is. I don’t know how the dude is remaining so strong right now where he must want to scream with frustration.
No Help Then Help: I was left gasping when Naofumi was protecting Raphtalia from the surprise attack. Naofumi overhearead the royal knights muttering deliberately that they had no intention of aiding the Shield Hero. Naofumi could have let those knights die from oncoming monsters, but nope, he didn’t. He went from being so mad to then just tearing up next moment the royal knights and villagers came to Naofumi’s aid. I just went through a wave of so much emotion during that whole scene sequence GOD DAMN IT!!. How Naofumi must have felt inside… He must have felt that people did believe in him, especially when the villagers thanked him. It made me tear up again. Can you see already what this series is doing to me?
Themes And Trivia
Lolicon: At the beginning of the episode Naofumi brings up a well-known reference, ‘Lolicon’, because of all the extra attention Raphtalia was getting. Lolicon means a sexual attraction to younger girls. Well, she is cute so the reference was suited, it was just hysterical actually being used in the series.
The Rising Of The Shield Hero is shaping already to be a winning series for me. The first three episodes have just blown me away with the set-up and Episode 3 was soo good, people. SOO GOOD!! It made me laugh, cry and smile all too much, there were just so many good moments in this. Raphtalia has gone from so frail to complete bad-ass. I love her newfound confidence and determination. Plus, she’s just gotten more adorable.
Those three other heroes… after this episode, I really don’t care about them. They are there for you to just hate on and the series does a good job with that. Motoyasu is the most ignorant out of the lot and the other two are bland. So why should I care about them? Ahaha. Cannot wait for when Naofumi gets his own back on them and everyone else.
Naofumi and Raphtalia as a unit work so well together, as this episode has demonstrated, and I loved seeing how much they had leveled up from all the training. The worst turning into the best moment was when the royal knights were not going to aid Naofumi and Raphtalia, leaving them for dead. Then all of a sudden the knights and villagers come to aid him, I went from boiling mad to shedding a few tears because I really feel for Naofumi’s character having no belief from the people who sent him to this world to save it. Then people starting to believe the Shield Hero is not what is rumored to be. Naofumi has been so selfless till this point and could have gone on a revenge killing spree. But the series has not wanted to go this way, that’s why I’m truly in love with this series, because of Naofumi’s protagonist his interesting choices and what he will do next. It’s exciting!!
