Winter 2019 Anime: Official Twitter Hashtags & Pages
2018 is almost out, guys and girls, and that means that another anime year is ready to take its place.
The first few minutes of this week’s episode might have set off viewers as Naofumi, in order to survive, buys a slave. We are introduced to Raphtalia, a racoon demi-human and this week’s delves into the beginning of this pair’s relationship and the backstory on Raphtalia and how she got to the point of becoming a slave. The setup of this episode was bloody fantastic, and I loved Raphtalia’s character.
Japanese Original Title: 奴隷の女の子
With no one to aid him, Naofumi resorts to making some tough decisions. One of those is the slave trader’s offer for Naofumi to buy a slave to serve him. Slaves can never disobey or betray their master when a contract is made. Naofumi takes in a young Racoon girl Raphtalia, in order to raise both their skill levels. Naofumi teaches Raphtalia how to fight – as all Naofumi is capable of is defending. Naofumi and Raphtalia venture to a small town to try to make some money and where Raphtalia relives a past nightmare.
Cutie Racoon: Establishing the obvious fact, Raphtalia is the cutest thing and her reaction to getting to eat a proper meal she received a gif was so precious. She has stolen my heart already.
Treated Equal: Naofumi’s treatment towards Raphtalia at the beginning would have annoyed viewers, as Naofumi forced high demands on Raphtalia, especially considering the position Naofumi has been put in and how society works in the world. Naofumi was going have to make some tough decisions and buying a slave may seem bad but I don’t think it is. It looks bad at first but through the course of the episode, he displays his kinder side. Naofumi makes sure Raphtalia is cared for, slowly gaining Raphtalia trust.
Raphtalia Demons: It was a hard pill to swallow the moment as Naofumi and Raphtalia face a dog monster, the same creature that killed Raphtalia’s parents. The trauma Raphtalia has gone through: to have to face her demons. In the series the saying rings true – ‘it’s kill or be killed’- and this episode displayed this well.
Opening Theme: The Rising Of The Shield Hero opening theme ‘RISE’ performed by MADKID is a killer beat that gets stuck in your head; I LOVE IT. The band MADKID debuted in 2014 and are known for their fast-paced hip hop, rap style of music.
Naofumi’s Position: Goblin Slayer from the Fall 2018 season caused a lot of controversy over two disturbing graphic scenes involving rape and gory child massacre. The Rising Of The Shield Hero is this season’s controversy over its first episode since it involves Naofumi falsely accused of rape. People assumed there was some strong prejudice against women. There is no proof I’ve come across to say otherwise.
After Naofumi is falsely accused, he turns rogue and this put him in a bad light to viewers. Naofumi is angry at the people who summoned him to save their world and the unjust, unfair system that this world has in place. Naofumi could have been a true asshole and decide not to save this world from the wave, but he didn’t, which makes him an interesting protagonist for this series and how he will get back at the unjust system.
The Rising Of The Shield Hero has me hooked guys. This episode was fantastic and it focused on Raphtalia and Naofumi starting out their relationships. It couldn’t have been done better. First, it looks bad when Naofumi forces Raphtaila to take up a sword and kill since she cannot refuse an order. Slowly as the episode unfolded we got to see Naofumi’s softer side because the dude is really not bad. He is just in a sucka-ass position right now and has to make some tough decisions.
I never doubted that Naofumi would treat Raphtalia fairly. Naofumi is balancing a lot on his shoulders trying to survive by leveling up his skills, and as the shield hero, all he can do is defend. Naofumi knows he won’t last five minutes, so this is the sole reason he takes in Naofumi and maybe others along the way. Ahh, I am so damn excited to see where everything goes because this series has set itself up so bloody well.
Another brilliant episode this week as Raphtalia and Naofumi start out their relationship. I wonder what other members he’ll pick up along the way, I’m excited to see and where Naofumi will go from there.
