P.A Works are the masters of variety in their series and a studio that takes a different course every time, from the aquatic Nagi No Asukara which focuses on young adolescence and love to them tackling the mecha genre with Kuromukuro. The diversity in the stories and genres they dip into is why every new season that comes along, I’m scrolling through for P.A Works’ titles. In Spring 2018 P.A Works brought us horse idol girls Uma Musume Pretty Derby, but this summer it’s a complete 180 turn in direction. They will explore the darker domain of savage beings characterized by their bloodlust and of vampire hunters who go by the name ‘Jaegers’ and who hunt these creatures of the night. It’s sounds alluring and exciting right? Well you are not going to want to miss this fast-paced action thriller.
Japanese Original Title: レヴァンツハウルズ
P.A Works tackling the vampire genre got me excited like a schoolgirl. The vampire genre itself has flown under the radar last few years and I was desperately yearning for it to get a boost. I think it just got one.
Everything felt a tease in Episode 1. We were just given a sample of what is to come and all felt shrouded in mystery. This episode was one of the strongest I’ve seen this year. What can I tell you about plotwise? There was not a lot to go on in the first episode, to be honest. Being an original anime, there is no source material to fall back on so paying extra close attention to what’s going on is vital. I cannot fault the setup of the episode, despite feeling it was a tease. We were introduced to the vampire hunters known as ‘Jaeger’ and we were given a mere glimpse into their characters. I was really curious to know why these individuals became vampire hunters.
Yuliy is the central character and the one I am most curious about. Yuliy is seeking revenge on vampires who destroyed his home. The guy is as stiff as a pole, emotionless and I am interested to know what is going through the guy’s head. It is characters like this who come off cold, unapproachable who reel your curiosity even more so.
The Vampires’ intentions are not made fully clear. Their random acts of bloodshed and actions leave you with many questions, That’s all Sirius The Jaeger has done to me. Many questions and no answers, resulting in the need for more from this series.
Atmospheric Animation: In the very first few seconds of the episode, you get this beautiful, memorizing blood-red moon. My eyes couldn’t be taken away from such a lovely sight. This continued throughout the episode in every background, from old architectural buildings to common car model Duesenberg, popular at that time. P.A Works prides itself on details and it’s that GOOD. It creates such a chilling atmosphere. Did you see the impeccable details in those Vampire teeth? Felt like they were about to pierce my neck.
Insane Action Sequences: First few minutes into the episode, it was feast time. Then everything becomes wild and frantic when Yuliy and the others hunters come charging in. The action sequences were insanely entertaining. I couldn’t take my eyes of Yuily, whipping out his slashing staff, killing in solo mode. The car chase was wicked as Yuily’s agility skills are something, diving onto the car like a panther. Even the bridge fight between Yuily and the enemy vampire (don’t know her name yet) was so captivating through their movements. Every action sequence was fast and full of such intensity. The bloody factor is excellent, by god – my heart might have stopped.
Vampires Get An Upgrade: Forget changing into a bat. We got a levitation upgrade and extending claws. That was a surprise but cool. From the introduction, I think that the vampires Yuily killed and this woman vampire are different.
Damn That Cliffhanger: Don’t you hate heart-stopping endings? Ugh, Sirius The Jaeger knows how to do it right. How can you do that to me?!
Violin Stand Out: The graceful instrument that is the violin is shown beautifully in this episode. First few seconds of the episode, you hear abrupt rhythm fills the atmosphere, sending the chills down your spine.
Jaegers: Specialised hunters who hunt vampires for a living. They use the ‘V Shipping Company’ known for its research and shipping as a disguise.
1930 era: It was known as the Great Depression for the collapse of the economy that affected primarily America and Europe.
Honestly… as I write, I feel lost for words at how GOOD this episode truly was. I meant when I said this is one of the strongest episodes I’ve seen in a long time. Sirius The Jaeger had a great setup and my excitement while watching went through the roof. I’ve always had a soft spot for the vampire genre. Can we just appreciate the insanely, intricate animation for one second? It is one of my favorite things about this series already and it just captured the time period, beautifully, giving us this authentic and classic feel. Don’t get me started on how those pearly white fangs look when about to sunk into flesh. Is it weird to say they looked beautiful too? The action was simply sublime. As soon as Yuliy came out swinging that sharp staff, oh damn. Things became electric and tense, it was so good.
Sirius The Jaeger, where have you been all my life?!?. I’ve never had a series allure me so much. I could be overhyping right now but guys, trust me when I say – this is some good stuff right here. My hopes for the vampire genre feel like have been answered. P.A Works, you have done good. If you are not watching this vampire thriller, better get on this now.
I’m hoping for next episode that we learn more about our vampire hunters and their vampire enemy’s intentions. Tell us in the comments if you have seen this first killer episode. What were your thoughts?
