Is Eugeo becoming the next Kirito? He seems to be getting all the ladies now. Will Kirito feel threatened and say, ‘Stop being too cool’? Will this be the last boss fight? Regardless of all the jokes, I have to say, I was glad to see an episode focused on Eugeo. His character seems to be the most intriguing so far.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 貴族の責務
Kirito explains to Eugeo that the way to develop their swordsmanship skills is by infusing a specific feeling or motivation to it in order to make it special. He then mentions to him that their two annoying upperclassmen, Raios and Humbert, are driven by their conceit from comparing themselves to others and that’s why when Humbert challenges to battle Eugeo he gladly accepts so he can have a taste of his power. When the battle ends with a draw, Humbert and Raios imply that they will get back to Eugeo in some way. The following day, Kirito, Eugeo, Tiese and Ronie spend the day together by going to the campus forest. Tiese reveals to them that she is a low level aristocrat and that their fellow page Frenica is put to do inappropriate things by her mentor Humbert, which makes Kirito and Eugeo go to the dorm to confront them. After realizing that they cannot do anything about the situation, because they did not break any school rules or the Taboo Index, Kirito warns Eugeo to be careful because they might be doing all this just to get back at him. The next day, Eugeo and Tiese talk about their future and how Tiese would like Eugeo to come and ‘be there for her’ after he wins the tournament and gain his noble title.
Eugeo is Kirito from Season 1: Seeing Eugeo struggling with his skills and abilities, doubting himself and following his heart, really reminds you of Kirito’s character in the first season. It is actually very nice to see how much Kirito has grown from those days and how he tries to guide Eugeo to make him more ‘cool’. The scene where Eugeo mentions that he was expecting Kirito to have lost it way before him, is a good example of Kirito’s cunningness and character development.
Another sexual assault? And there we have it again. Okay, I am not going to get started once more on how badly represented women are in the Sword Art Online series in general, but goddamn it, we have another sexual assault. I don’t understand why every villain in this show has to be a sadistic pervert and take women as their slave or make them do inappropriate things. This is unacceptable and seeing it used ONCE MORE in the third season of this show is just ridiculous.
Kirito’s speech: ‘Those with power must use it for the sake of the powerless’. Look at him go with his fancy words and motivating speeches. When he started talking about ‘noble obligation’ and how people should critically think than just obey the rules, I was constantly thinking that Kikuoka’s plan is actually set in motion and is working pretty well. Kirito will definitely be the one to bring chaos in this world by making everyone revolt against the Taboo Index just by saying that the humans’ best weapon is their ability to think and process situations.
Tiese’s confession: If I say that I didn’t see that coming, it would be a lie. It was obvious that she fancied him, from their first scene together in the previous episode, but what really confused me here was Eugeo’s answer to her feelings. I thought that he was madly in love with Alice. Did he not realize what Tiese asked of him or is he just scared and confused that when he meets Alice he might be friend zoned? Is he becoming a player? What is going on?? But let’s be real, I don’t see thing happening, so probably poor Tiese will be the one to be friend zoned at the end.
Themes & Trivia
Raios Antinous: Antinous (Ancient Greek: Ἀντίνοος) was a Bithynian Greek youth and a favorite, or lover, of the Roman emperor Hadrian. He was deified after his death, being worshiped in both the Greek East and Latin West, sometimes as a god and sometimes merely as a hero. Antinous died amid mysterious circumstances. Various suggestions have been put forward for how he died, ranging from an accidental drowning to an intentional human sacrifice or suicide. As horrible as this sounds, I hope Raios gets the same ending in Sword Art Online: Alicization as well.
Eugeo cleans his sword and then he uses the same cloth to clean the sweat of his face?! Eugeo, I thought you were a proper clean gentleman but this changes everything; you savage lumberjack. Also, am I the only one that got caught totally off guard when Kirito’s yawn correlated to the fox’s one? It made me jump off my seat.
I have a very bad feeling about the next episode. The ending on this one, was way too light-hearted so I think those two shitheads are going to do something really bad to Eugeo soon… Let’s stay cool and trust Kirito.
