Now that’s what I call a cliffhanger! Finally Kirito and Eugeo meet up with Alice in this week’s episode of Sword Art Online: Alicization and I have to admit their fight was as epic and unexpected as it could be.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 金木犀の騎士
Kirito has activated his Perfect Weapon Control skills, and with Eugeo’s help they manage to defeat Fanatio, leaving her critically wounded. Kirito then loses his cool and cries out loud that he wants to save Fanatio so he uses one of the special daggers Cardinal entrusted to them, despite the fact that they were instructed to save them for Alice and the Administrator. Fanatio is taken under Cardinal’s care and the two take an elevator, that is operated by a girl who has had the same Calling for 107 years, to the 80th floor, where Alice awaits them in the beautiful chamber of Cloudtop Garden. Kirito tries to Attack Alice to give Eugeo a chance to use the dagger on her and challenges her to a duel. As Kirito is being pushed away by her overwhelming power and swordsmanship, Eugeo manages to activate his skills as well and freezes them. Unfortunately, Alice is too strong to be defeated by that move and easily breaks free. Kirito uses his special skill once more that ends up opening a hole is the wall and both Kirito and Alice fall from it, much to Eugeo’s despair.
Do you feel the same way towards the Administrator? That was actually a very good question, Eugeo. I understand how Kirito sees everyone in the Underworld as victims of a horrible experiment but come on, using the bloody dagger on Fanatio in order to save her? That was a bit too much. And after Eugeo’s question, I feel like Kirito is going to go easy on the Administrator as well, because he sees her just as a ‘corrupted soul’ with not really much of a choice on what’s she is doing, which I believe is not a good attitude to have towards the most evil lady of that world.
Kirito’s elevator chit-chat: I love how Kirito wants to know more even for the most irrelevant characters of the story. At the beginning he was probably fishing her out to check if she is hostile or not but then it turned out to be a nice chit-chat conversation as they were going up the elevator. I also think that the Operator acts as a reminder of how terrible the Administrator and the whole system really is.
Alice in the Cloudtop Garden: Come on guys, did you seriously believed that Alice was sitting under that tree unarmed while waiting for the first two intruders that managed to get so high in the Axiom Church building? You ignorant fools!
That cliffhanger: Alright, I have to admit that I did not see that coming and now I am pleasantly intrigued to see what will happen to them. One thing that I have to mention for the fight between those three is the fact that Eugeo froze both Alice and Kirito but did not freeze her sword? What kind of logic is that?
Themes & Trivia
Kawahara talks about the female characters of SAO: Okay, I have been mentioning in my reviews how Kawahara doesn’t really portray female characters as they should be and in an interview that was posted on Dengeki Online on Friday, he mentioned that, ‘The female characters are going to get more active in the story from now on‘ and addressed the matter in more depth. When he went to overseas events, he received feedback for his writing, and he concluded that he should write stories with ‘political correctness’ in mind to a degree. For this reason, he is trying to give his female characters more agency. I am just going to say: it was about time. Please no more sexual assaults used as a plot device… You can read the full article of the interview here.
The Administrator is living the dream life: she has made herself the most powerful and knowledgeable being of the Underworld, she is immortal and just spends her days sleeping. How bloody amazing is that? Plus, she has created the most powerful Knights to protect her while she is sleeping. She is a true Overlord.
Fall from grace
I feel like the Administrator is going to take Eugeo hostage and somehow Alice and Kirito will work together to defeat her and save him. Nevertheless, I really want to see where exactly Alice and Kirito will end up. Is it going to be at the bottom of the tower or just somewhere around the city?
