Shoumetsu Toshi (AFTERLOST) seems quite promising! The first episode was so full of adventures, plot twists and revelations, it felt like one whole season got summarized in 22 minutes. Many questions are left unanswered, so let’s keep watching to see what happens to the package-zoned girl and to find out the secrets of the vanished city.
The main character seems to be Yuki, a young girl. When the episode starts, we see her in a laboratory, with many wires attached on her head. I instantly thought that we will take a trip in her memories. Aaaand… I was right! Yuki is in the middle of a crowded city until a terrible disaster occurs. Everything seems to disappear and fade away, while Yuki is saved by Akira, a guy who looks like an agent. When the memories end, she sits in a cell-like room, surrounded by hoodie guys and seems pretty unsatisfied. But a hot guy WITH A BEARD saves the day and takes her out of there. On his decent scooter, he rides like hell to avoid the ones who chase them. This part got me quite confused, since I did not know from whom they were trying to escape.
Everything gets even more mysterious when a glowing floating guy (no joke!) appears in the middle of the street and attacks them too. But Yuki, who appears to have magical powers as well, helps to avoid him -for the moment. Finally, after all these events, we get some answers. We learn that the hot bearded guy is actually a courier and Yuki was his package (aw!), that 3 years ago a whole city was mysteriously disappeared and the only survivor is Yuki, that the citizens whose bodies never got found are named Tama-Shi and the glowing guy appears to be one of those. The 2 scientists who wanted Yuki delivered to them, inform her that a message from her extinct father arrived, in which he informs her that he waits in the Lost city… So, the hot delivery guy will transfer her there. However, they got attacked AGAIN by the floating, glowing guy, and we see a hilarious hardcore chase in which all the laws of Physics bow down to the badass scooter. But, sadly, Yuki and the hot guy end up in a trap…
The floating Guy: It was unexpected and got me off guard. I don’t know how he will affect the plot, but he came out of nowhere to shake things up.
The epic scooter escape: Since it’s a Madhouse production, I didn’t fall of my chair while the scooter imitated Superman, but, damn; I want to know the brand!
Plot twist Ending: A girl with a necklace similar to Yuki’s appears and kidnaps her, while the courier guy lays still in the ground and a shotgun fires…
The anime is based on a 2014 mobile game series, released by Wright Flyer Studios. The game has had 3 updates until now, and it is quite popular. As a true fan of video games, I really support the idea of having an anime inspired of a game, instead of a manga. Cheers to that!
I would have preferred a more introductory and explanatory first episode, with smoother transitions during the action scenes. Although, even if some things didn’t make sense and the queries are numerous, I know that I’m looking forward to the next one. I like the mysterious atmosphere and the combination of all these elements mixed in one anime, plus the voice acting and the artwork are easy on the eye.
Shoumetsu Toshi (AFTERLOST) seems promising. Although the first episode was full to the brims, it could lead to an exciting story with riddles and breathtaking incidents. Government conspiracies and vanished cities can never be boring… right?
