Hello, everyone! And welcome back to the weekly anime reviews of Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata Flat! Unfortunately, this is the very last episode of the second season and it means that we will have to part ways. But before saying our goodbyes, we still have a whole episode to talk about! First, I’ll just say that I’m not really happy when anime end with only 11 episodes. I think that’s very little screen time, especially for some shows that have elaborate plot lines and leave you wondering what’s going to happen next.
In case of Saekano Flat, the ending was clear, and pretty much all of the questions got their answers. However, I do hope that we get another season, or at least an OVA, just to get an idea of what’s going to happen from now on. Though I admit, that a whole season is unlikely to happen (we probably will get an OVA or a movie though).
But anyway, enough of useless ramblings, and let’s get started with the review of the final episode of Saenai Heroine no Sodateka Flat!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 再起と新規のゲームスタート
I do think that this was a very emotional episode in many ways. Especially the first part. In the previous episode we saw that Kato asked Tomoya out on a date. She did have him go around with her for the whole day. Interestingly enough, the place Kato chose for both of them to spend their date at was the Mall where they went many moons ago. Brings back memories from the first season. She tried to recreate the day as much as she could. But apparently she had other reasons except for trying to cheer up, like wanting to go to the mall herself, and her being a bit mad at Tomoya that he left her all alone in the mall the first time they came around.
The other part of the episode was Utaha and Eriri waiting for Shinkansen (bullet train) to go for their first meeting with the new team in Osaka. And this is when Tomoya appeared out of the blue to see them off. Well, it was a nice gesture from his side, but not planned well. I mean seriously? Because of him they missed the freaking Shinkansen. Those bullet trains cost a fortune here in Japan! Especially from Tokyo to Osaka. Brr…
The highlight of this episode was Kato having Tomoya choose clothes for her. His reaction was priceless to be honest. And when he basically said he’s not going to help her with choosing the clothes basically because he’s an otaku, has no sense in fashion, etc., Kato forced her way through and had him choose after seeing her wear both dresses. Go, girl! 😀 But yes, apparently this left Tomoya mentally exhausted. Ain’t it adorable?
The second highlight of the episode was Eriri leaning to kiss Tomoya, but getting outdone by Utaha, who ended up stealing Tomoya’s first kiss. Seriously, the reactions in this episode were priceless.
Themes & Trivia
Tomoya decided to buy a hat for Kato as a thanks for the day she spent cheering him up, also as a thanks for the glasses she got for him in the first season. Well, the hat was literally the same one she had in the first episode of first season, but what can you do? What else would you expect from an otaku? Just like Tomoya said himself, he has no idea how clothing works.
As a whole, the episode was full of memories. It took you back through both seasons to the very first episode. I think the finale could have had a bit more impact, but I am more or less content with the direction they took.
Last, the most obvious thing in the ending was the sudden (not very if you ask me) appearance of Izumi-chan! She entered Tomoya’s high school, and do you know what this means? Yes of course you do, and so do I, and I think we all have been getting this idea for a while now. Izumi-chan who has quit Rouge en Rouge to become the new illustrator of Blessing SoftwRE. I wonder who the author will be, but I’m guessing Tomoya, especially because he wrote the last part of the first game. It was his training, I guess?
I was expecting Tomoya to get Eriri and Utaha back in some way, but I’m glad that didn’t happen. That would have been the worse kind of cliche development. This ending is very realistic and nice for a fan service anime like Saekano!
Here’s to the new beginnings
Well, my friends, we went a long way together, we had our ups and downs, but here is the end. The show has reached its end and we have to move on too. Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata Flat was your regular fan service/harem anime, but from the second part of the season on we got to see a new and unexpected side of the famous anime.
Okay, I won’t keep you here for much longer! Thank you for sticking to my reviews for this whole season! I hope we meet again!
