Hello everyone! It’s been a while. I hope you’re all doing great. We have only a few episodes left in Saekanountil the season is over and the tensions are getting pretty hot. The last episode showed as that Utaha and Eriri have chosen to walk a path which will lead them further away from Tomoya. Fans should accept the fact that this is a project that will only bring out the best of both of them and can do nothing except accepting what there is. But for Tomoya, this is a huge blow to say the least. He lost both the artist and author of his circle and it is pretty much impossible to say if he will be able to continue his circle activities and make a new game, THE game that he intended to make from Episode 1 of the first season. He either has to convince them to work with him in some way or look for new creators.
Now let’s see what happens in this particular episode!
Japanese Original Episode Title: そして竜虎は神に挑まん
The episode was mostly centered on Utaha and Eriri talking and discussing what to do with the proposal, so we didn’t really get to find out what Tomoya’s plans are from this point on forward.
Akane is apparently somebody to be feared of, but then again, it looks like this is something that comes not from her desire for money or fame, but from her love for creating new things, enormous things, art that has never been seen before. We learned from Utaha’s producer that her and Akane were in the same manga club back in the university, and this in some sense shows the love Akane has always had toward otaku culture, and in particular, toward creating something new. Of course, the way she talked to Eriri was probably a bit too harsh, but thanks to it, Eriri finally managed to get over her slump and draw again beautifully and in the same manner she drew the last pages for the Blessing Software’s game. This is something very laudable.
On the other hand, we have Utaha, who is already a widely known creator (a light novel author) who was told that she won’t be of any use to Akane if Eriri didn’t join the team. Can you understand how painful this can be? As a creator I can tell you, there is nothing worse than being told you worth pretty much nothing. Though on the other hand, I also see this as something Akane did deliberately just to push both of them a bit forward, to make them more ambitious. And guess what, this actually paid off.
If you compare the Eriri that was next to Tomoya and the Eriri that agreed to work with Akane you will see what I am trying to say here. Tomoya tried his best to encourage Eriri, but he didn’t try pushing her even a bit, which is exactly why he lost her and Utaha both. I don’t really want to blame Toniya, but I don’t think he will manage to make another game if he doesn’t change his methods. There definitely is no freaking way in this universe that he can get them back if he stays the same soft producer. That’s not how things work in the world of creators.
This was one emotional episode. I can’t believe that in one single episode we saw not only Eriri but also Utaha cry like little babies. It may have been because they were afraid of the unknown future that will present itself when they start working with Akane, it may have been because they realized how much of a big and large responsibility they are about to take on their shoulders, and maybe it might have been because they realized they are betraying Tomoya. But that is exactly how life is. You can’t move forward if you keep clinging to people who will never ever try to even push you forward, who won’t encourage you to keep growing as a creator. To be completely honest and transparent here, I will just say that I am glad Eriri took on the offer. Tomoya is a good guy, indeed, but he is not a good producer. That is what the past two episodes have been trying to convey to us. At least, that’s how I see it.
Themes & Trivia
Nostalgia. This is the most important theme of the episode. Remember the ending? Kato went so far as to cut her hair, she was wearing the clothes in which Tomoya saw her on the top of the hill for the first time and she was waiting for him at the same spot. You might wonder why. Tomoya has just accepted the fact that he lost both of key members of his circle. He is feeling down, really down. Try to put yourself in his shoes for a second. Kato who obviously has the hots for Tomoya, is trying her best to cheer him up. As a girl, I will only say that chopping your long hair off ain’t an easy feat to accomplish. I applaud her from the bottom of my heart.
Beginning of a new Era?
Well, the episode is over, and all we can do is wait for the rest of the cour to find out what is going to happen. There is a possibility that Tomoya will look for new creators and try to compete with Utaha and Eriri. But chances are he will change himself and his friends will come back and continue creating games with him!
