This was another fun episode of Radiant, and I’m so glad it was! It was silly and funny enough to be a stress reliever, even though Doc, the focus of this week’s story, was having a hard time. Sorry for enjoying your suffering, Doc!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 地下水道に潜む者 -Monster
If the previous episode showed how Seth and Melie were getting along nicely, this time it was about Doc’s relationship with the two! He was also trying to improve his relationship with Miss Melba, but was interrupted by a coffee-loving monster from the sewers which kidnapped him! Doc really gets caught up in crazy events. And so it was up to Seth and Melie (and Mister Boobrie) to rescue him! With how clumsy they are though, will he be okay?
Training under Yaga: Seth finally started his magic training with Yaga, and as I expected, it’s Spartan training! I think it’s the best kind of training for someone as mischievous and scatter-brained as this boy. Well, he did already experience tough love from Alma, so I’m sure he’ll be fine. Plus, Yaga just gave him the push he needed to become more motivated in getting stronger by playing a few mind tricks on him so he wouldn’t give up. It sure was effective, don’t you think? It also served as an experience training for him, especially since it felt like a kind of hint at his search for Radiant. If Seth gave up on saving Doc from the kraken in its home turf, how will he even destroy Radiant, which should be full of Nemesis far stronger than that monster? I’m proud of Seth for not giving up, because it not only served as his training but also because Doc is his friend!
Saving Doc: I think Doc suffered more from Seth and Melie’s friendly fires than at the hands of the Kraken. It’s amazing how resourceful they were, but I guess this proved that being resourceful doesn’t equate to being successful. We also got to learn what it is exactly that Melie does, but it’s either the Kraken is just far smarter than the Nemesis, or Melie’s really not that good at her job. The two get points for trying so hard and never giving up, though. And at least, at the end of the day, they still did succeed in saving Doc, and earned his actual friendship!
Doc and Devi: Finding out that the Devil Fish Kraken wasn’t a horrible man-eating monster but just a coffee enthusiast instead was an incredibly amusing plot twist! Not only did it get to drink lots of coffee thanks to all those attempts by Seth and Melie, it even ended up becoming friends with Doc! I’m glad my hunch on Seth’s tactic didn’t happen, because I thought he let himself get eaten so he could Titan Punch on his way out of Devi’s stomach! Devi is the real winner here, guys. It’s actually pretty cute, too, when its true friendly nature was revealed!
The coffee: I’ve been wondering how Kettle Coffee got loyal patrons if Melba’s ‘special’ blends always turned out… shocking. I was about to think that she just experiments on the side and her normal brews are truly amazing, yet it turns out that her dad made that delicious cup of coffee!
Stake-out: Uh-oh. Dragunov and his men are keeping watch on Artemis in case Seth leaves because he was deemed highly dangerous by The Inquisition! I’m sure this’ll be a problem in the future, like when he sets off to find Radiant again. Although, Dragunov seemed pretty chill with the whole deal at the moment.
Amazing Beasts: Was the title of the book Yaga was holding a reference to the movie Fantastic Beasts? If it is, it’s very fitting!
Dragunov’s book: I couldn’t see it all that clearly, plus Radiant’s letters are a bit confusing to decipher, but I think the title of the book he was reading is ‘Consideration Regarding Sorcerers’. I wonder if that’s an Easter egg of what’s to come or it doesn’t really mean anything.
Devil fish kraken: When you search online, you’ll find that devil fish refers to a type of ray. But you’ll also find that devil fish is what the giant Pacific octopus is nicknamed as! And because the kraken is a legendary sea creature that looks like an octopus/squid, we could say that the Devil Fish Kraken technically exists in real life! Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a coffee lover like Devi, though.
After being a tad disappointed with the episode last week, this one was a step up once again! The premise was simple too, but the writing was much better in my opinion. I’m really hoping that it’ll improve further in the episodes to come. We’re already in the seventh episode, so I’m expecting that the plot will get much more interesting and exciting soon! If not, then it’ll just keep on being a feel-good show switching between fun and mediocre every week, with good art, at least.
Seth improving in using magic, Yaga giving him a test, and the Bravery Quartet making a comeback? The preview sure made the next episode sound thrilling! It made me have high expectations, so I hope it doesn’t disappoint!
