I wasn’t expecting that the first dilemma of Radiant wouldn’t be resolved in the second episode, so it made the show seem slow in my book. However, it did have some pretty interesting developments that caught my interest. It was more than enough to keep my eyes glued on the screen the whole while!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 本当の勇気
A Nemesis had just crash landed in town, and while Seth tried his best to defeat it, it wasn’t enough. Fortunately, a group of experienced sorcerers called the Bravery Quartet arrived to help him out! They asked him to become a decoy while they evacuated the other citizens, but something smelled fishy…
Bravery Quartet: When these four appeared like saviors at the end of the previous episode, I felt super relieved. I was even excited to see what kind of help they’d do! And now, with Don Bossman giving Seth a pep talk, I was even more impressed. But something felt off, especially when he said ‘If you wanna survive, you gotta be smart.’ Et voila! My gut was right on the money! They were indeed Nemesis Hunters, in a different sense of the phrase: they follow where the Nemesis crash, then loot the places they land on. To think that they seemed like powerful sorcerers, too. Instead, they use their magic for selfish reasons. I kinda understand that they were doing it to get back at the ‘normies’ who hate sorcerers, but that’s just giving them legit reasons to be pissed off!
The curse? Oho? So the curse that sorcerers get from being touched by the Nemesis are weird body mutations? That’s why Seth has horns on his head! Could Alma’s be the loss of her arm, I wonder?
Seth and the Nemesis: I was proud of Seth for dodging the Nemesis during their chase and managing to tie it up on his own afterwards! However, there was one thing I kept thinking of while they were destroying everything in their path: people could have died there! I sincerely hope that the Bravery Quartet managed to tell EVERYONE to evacuate before all hell broke loose on the town. Heck, just with that laser canon the Nemesis unleashed from its face out of nowhere, that was a total wreck! That’s why I was so shocked when Seth put himself in harm’s way just to protect the townspeople who hate him (except for Tommy)! Now, it’s curious what’s up with his hands that they successfully became a shield for something that destructive. But for Don Bossman to be shocked as well, it seems like something is up!
Jiji: Okay, I wasn’t expecting the guy who looked like his brain got fried to be the most powerful of the quartet! Unfortunately, it seems Jiji’s brain really is fried somewhat, that’s why Don Bossman’s the boss.
Don Bossman: His name is redundant since a don and a bossman both refer to a leader of an organization. Definitely a perfect name for the person in charge of a con group, though!
Nemesis cows: Alma mentioned that the false alarm she went to was because they mistook a cow as a Nemesis. In the manga, Seth is actually the one dumb enough to make that mistake. Instead of what we saw in the first episode where he was chased by cows, in the manga he was chased by the cows’ caretakers! It’s because Seth attacked the cows, thinking that the ‘nemesis-cows’ hurt the sleeping caretakers.
Simple yet entertaining! That’s how I’d describe this episode. Like I said, it was pretty slow compared to how usual series start, but I appreciated it all the same! More so because it hit two birds with one stone by introducing the natural enemy and then establishing how dysfunctional the relationship between sorcerers and normal people is. I’m still also very impressed with the art! Now that we got to see more action this time, I feel like I can hope for this kind of quality for the rest of the season!
I only have few concerns though. I hope they give us a very good explanation why Seth used his hands as a shield. I hope it’s more of ‘I did it on purpose‘ rather than ‘it was a last stand’ kind of thing. They also could’ve shown even a short scene clearly establishing that the citizens were being evacuated before Seth and the Nemesis wreaked havoc. Guess overall, the writing needs to be clearer on certain things.
While it’s great that Seth protected the people in the bank from the laser canon, there’s still the issue of ‘how the heck will they defeat the Nemesis!’ Let’s hope Alma arrives in time and saves them! I’d also love to see the Bravery Quartet get caught, but one thing at a time, I guess.
