In spite of this episode’s title sounding like a very standard line from some sort of hentai (not that I know what is being said in hentai… just speculating), New Game!!has returned this week with another episode overwhelmed with cuteness, awkwardness, and the occasional references to food. Enjoy!
Japanese Original Episode Title: ……うー, 恥ずかしい!
Aoba has landed her dream job: she is a character designer for the company that created her favorite game, working under her icon’s wing, Yagami Ko. Overly excited and eager to help, she tries to further contribute to the character development process, but due to lack of experience, she has very little to offer, and that makes her feel inadequate. Thankfully, Hifumi realizes Aoba is feeling uncomfortable and takes her out for lunch to cheer her up. In the meantime, Nene works super-hard to program her personal project, Nene Quest, and asks for Umiko’s support. Shizuku tries to revise the specs of the game, causing Umiko’s fury and brief quest for redemption in the form of a forehead flick. Hardcore.
An increase in office drama: EventhoughI mentioned it in the previous episode’s review, I cannot avoid mentioning it again: the office drama is getting more serious. I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that since the anime is following Aoba’s experience of the job and now she’s been promoted, she doesn’t deal with crisis in the way she did as a newbie. The fact that the team still treats her like one is probably troublesome to her.
Hifumi-boss: Hifumi’s character is developing greatly. Already one of my favourites, seeing her taking care of Aoba and exhausting herself from too much talking was kind of adorable. Too bad she couldn’t get her shopping done in peace.
Umiko-boss: Apart from the fact that Umiko is hardcore and awesome, I love how she always seems to profoundly care both about the quality of her work and the people around her. Her relationship with Nene and that little smile she wears when she picks up the phone is a wonderful manifestation of that.
Shizuku’s wisdom: Even though silly most of the time, Shizuku grants us with bit of wishom that justify her roles as leader of the pack, like in the scene where she said to Umiko that ‘Yagami wouldn’t be who she is without her past’. I’m kind of relieved that there’s a decent side to her.
Epic forehead flick: I have seen Umiko physically abuse people in this show before, and the forehead flick has been a new addition to her pretty standardized method of shooting people with her airsoft gun. I thought it looked pretty painless until I tried it on myself.
The lagging issue: It’s interesting to see the girls dealing with issues that gamers actually face when playing. A good example is the lagging problem that Umiko, Nene, Yun, Yagami and Hifumi are all discussing in the episode. The fur texture simulated by scanning blankets seems like a genius idea, by the way. Watching Umiko burning down bear characters reminded me of burning people in the Sims.
Themes & Trivia
Seafood culture in Japan: Japan, being an island, has a huge tradition in seafood cuisine. When I saw the crab lunch Aoba and Hifumi were having, I almost cried.
Tamago Sando: Shizuku is eating a typical egg salad sandwich. You can find that sort of thing in most places (in the UK it’s usually mixed with watercress), but here’s a recipe on how to make it Japanese style for your very own bento.
Tamagoyaki: Another typical egg dish, the one that Shizuku is tasting and that (supposedly) Hifumi made. You can check out the recipe here.
Umiko is a little bit tsundere: ‘Tsundere’ is a character that initially appears hostile and defensive, but gradually demonstrates their kinder side. Hard on the outside, soft on the inside, like a medium boiled egg. What is it with eggs today…
Somehow, this episode will make you hungry…
Nothing really happened in this episode rather than trivial worries about work and things we have seen again several times: Nene is programming, Umiko is helping her, Aoba is insecure, Shizuku is problematic, Hifumi is cooking… not much excitement. I wonder if one of the girls will just get fed up with work and will kill all of them by the end of the show. Hahah.
