It’s been a year since New Game! Season 1 was released, and it feels the timing to release Season 2 couldn’t be better. The show seems to be the most anticipated anime of the season, and for good reason: its bubbly vibe, enjoyable character development, and insights to the gaming world are exactly the type of thing to look forward to watching in the summertime.
Japanese Title: 恥ずかしいところを見られてしまいました……
A year after starting to work for Eagle Jump, Aoba find herself back in the office expecting her first kouhai, only to find out that there will be no new hires this year. The workload seems to be at a low point at the moment, so the Eagle Jump team decides to go flower-watching in the evening. During the day, the girls get interviewed by Rin and Shizuku on their impressions and suggestions concerning last year’s project. In the meantime, Nene meets with Umiko to discuss programming, since she invested time in building a game of her own. Umiko offers her feedback and encourages her to continue. In the end of the day, the team has a picnic at the flower viewing where, obviously, an abundance of food and alcohol is available.
Hifumi’s promotion: being the oldest one in the character design team, Hifumi is offered the leading role, as Ko is about to become this project’s art director. Naturally, she freaks out and can’t utter a word, however this may conveniently work well for her, since her goal for this year is to work on overcoming her social anxiety. Let’s see.
Ko’s weird pillow: What is the deal with Ko’s office chair pillow? I’m not an expert in office furniture and its accessories, but what she’s sitting on dangerously looks like a haemorrhoid donut cushion. She’s such a weirdo.
Shizuku is still completely tactless: and casually ignores how uncomfortable Hifumi feels when she takes pictures of her.
Umiko’s weird relationship with Nene: I wouldn’t even call it a love-hate relationship. In fact, I think these two work together so well, they are almost fundamental for each other in order to ease out the tension created of their overwhelming attitudes.
Aoba finally said it: She asked Shizuku why there are only female employees in the company. Haven’t we all been thinking about that? Obviously, the fact that Shizuku is a pretty attractive woman herself is an effort to render the fact slightly less creepy.
Umiko cares: Umiko’s attitude when defending her subordinates at work is admirable, pinpointing that the company’s management should not make last minutes alterations to the game so that the programmers won’t have to overwork. Kudos!
Rin has a crush on Ko: Asking her to praise her food and freaking out during the interview… isn’t it too obvious? Not to mention she was taking care of her in the previous season when she was ill.
Themes & Trivia
Hanami: The Japanese tradition of flower viewing. It is customary for people to have picnics by the blossomed trees. The night version of that is called ‘yozakura’, which is what is taking place in this episode.
Otoro: Shizuku brings over otoro, which is the fattiest and most desirable part of fish to have in sushi (*mouth waters*). It’s supposed to melt in your mouth with hardly any chewing.
Sake: Japanese rice alcohol that can also be drunk hot. In my humble opinion, the sneakiest of drinks I’ve ever had.
Good, relaxed, setting-the-mood type of first episode. Colouring and animation as beautiful as expected. Amazing shots of great food. That’s all I could ask for.
