Hello everyone! Hopefully, if you are reading this, then you too, just like me have been waiting for a new Natsume Yujincho season for a few years. I will put it straight: for me, writing the review for this anime is a huge privilege and honour, because I have been a huge fan of the series for many years now. Natsume Yujincho is probably one of the most famous and widely loved anime out there both in Western world and Japan. Of course, as with any show, book, movie, or anime there are people who aren’t particularly fond of the series, but that is totally up to you. I personally find this anime to be unique and a pure gem in the genre.
For those of you who haven’t watched the previous seasons I will give a brief overview of the anime. Natsume Takashi is a high schooler who has been able to see the youkai, creatures from the other world. He has inherited this ability from his grandmother, Natsume Reiko. However, this is not the only thing he inherited. One day he finds Reiko’s Book of Friends which is filled with names of the youkai that Reiko had won over. Of course, the names grant you power to control the given youkai. Many would want such a power, but Natsume is returning the names to their owners. In his endeavours he is accompanied by a certain youkai, who most of the times appears in the form of a maneki neko (lucky cat) and whom Natsume calls “Nyanko Sensei”. However, in reality this cute creature is a horrifying dragon-like ayakashi. And thus their adventures begin.
So far, only one episode of Natsume Yujincho has aired, but it left me content. The mood and the atmosphere of the anime hasn’t changed a bit, which is a huge plus. I should also mention, that the choice of voice actors for this anime is out of this world. It’s filled with big stars in Japanese anime industry. The overall progress of the episode was very similar to previous seasons too, which helped to break the ice and remind us of how heartwarming and bright this show is.
Now, let’s talk a bit about the episode itself. A weird youkai who lives in a pot arrives at Natsume’s place and calls his grandmother a thief who has robbed her of her favourite doll and demands it back. She threatens Natsume to take away his precious treasures if he doesn’t do so. This makes Natsume both worry for his newly found happy home and his foster parents, as well as doubt his grandmother. He doesn’t remember her very well, and all of his relatives just keep saying that she was a crazy woman. On the other hand the image of Reiko that the youkai have presented him with is completely the opposite.
During his search for the doll, Natsume encounters a youkai and see through his memories. He learns what exactly has happened with the doll and manages to find it. The details I will leave out so you can watch the episode and enjoy it to the fullest!
Themes and Trivia
In the recent years, we were introduced with many anime that combine the modern Japanese school life with Japanese folklore and mythology. Natsume Yujincho is one of those anime. If you are interested in similar anime then you should definitely check out Kamisama Hajimemashita, Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha, and Fukigen na Mononokean, to name a few. However, as I already mentioned above, Natsume Yujinchou in particular stands out. This is an episodic anime, and you get acquainted with new characters throughout the series. The plot takes its time to develop too, but it does: slowly yet steadily.
This is the fifth season of Natsume Yujincho, with the first season airing in 2008 and the last one in 2012. I can assure you that not many anime get these many seasons, especially episodic anime like this. Then again, it is probably no surprise: While the previous seasons were centered on Natsume’s relationships with his foster parents, with the friends in his high school, with the youkai and especially with the families that threw him out back in the day, I am getting a feeling that this season is going to be more about Reiko and what kind of person she was. In my opinion this season will mostly centre on the memories of youkai as to what kind of a person she was, which will also help Natsume to remember his grandmother in a better light.
With this I am going to end my rumblings. I hope that you enjoyed reading this review. I hope you will enjoy the new season of Natsume Yujincho as much as I am planning to! Make sure to comment and let us know, here on Manga.Tokyo, what you’re thinking about the new season of Natsume Yujincho! See you next week!
