We’re back with more cute kitty hijinks! There’s something oddly satisfying about seeing Subaru and his new kitty learning to live with one another… Episode 2 brings even more cute fluff to savor!!
Subaru struggles with coming up with a name for his new feline companion, finding inspiration in an unlikely place. But, how does kitty feel about her new name?
Original Japanese Title: 君を呼ぶ
Kitty Loves Laptop: Every cat owner I have ever spoken to has complained that their beloved furrball has taken up roost on their laptop. Some say it’s for warmth, others say it’s a ploy to get your undivided attention… it’s one of the world’s great mysteries… But watching Subaru struggle to reclaim his laptop from the cutest little gatekeeper in the world is downright hilarious!
Naming Kitty: So, we finally bring up something that I noticed when writing last week’s review… Kitty doesn’t have a name… Of course, seeing as Subaru has only acquired his furry roommate just recently, I figured he should be given a pass… He runs through a number of names in hopes of getting kitty to answer his calls. But, if you’re like me and you did your research, you’ll know that Kitty’s name is….
Flashback: We are treated to a cute flashback of Subaru reading a picture book with his mom when he was just a wee shota~ It’s short and doesn’t really reveal much about Subaru as a character, but at least it helps him come up with a name for his cat. On the other hand, the cat’s flashbacks are much more interesting and full of beautiful character development… for the cat of course.
Themes & Trivia
Introvert Problems: Subaru’s journey to the store is one rife with obstacles, and for someone who has made an art of avoiding contact with most living things, a simple trip suddenly becomes an epic quest. Trust there are plenty of misunderstandings and they’re mostly played for laughs, but, thankfully the pet shop clerk is understanding.
THE CAT’s PERSPECTIVE IS THE BEST PART OF THESE EPISODES! Unlike her human companion, Haru is expressive and they’ve done a great job of slowly delving into who she is as a character and not just as a pet. If only the whole thing could be told from the cat’s perspective and this would be perfect! Though, I will admit that watching Subaru struggle to figure out basic cat care things is mildly amusing too…
Say My Name, Say My Name~
This was a cute episode! I’m still not a huge fan of Subaru, but, he’s kind of growing on me… though I can’t help but think that this might have been better suited as one of those short form anime series.
I’ll be back next week with another My Roommate is a Cat review, but in the meantime, be sure to check out MANGA.TOKYO’s other amazing Winter 2019 reviews!!
