With how My Hero Academia introduced and revealed certain things in this episode, it wouldn’t be surprising if any of us forgot that the third season is already drawing to a close! But it is and a new stage has been set up. It’s making us look forward to something, and that’s why watching this whole thing had me all excited and giddy!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 出会いの季節
A new semester has officially started in U.A.! Unfortunately for Bakugo and Midoriya though, they had to miss out on the opening ceremony, and a lot of other school info that were deliberately being kept a secret from them! Plus, their (anonymous) troublemaking incident was broadcast during the assembly, which caught the attention of some curious students. Meanwhile, the society outside the school seemed to be at a tipping point due to the end of All Might’s era.
Twice’s observations: I initially thought the blonde guy monologuing about the state of society was just a random dude who had good opinions. Then it turned out he’s actually Twice, one of the members of the Vanguard Action Squad of the League of Villains! (What a mouthful!) No wonder he somehow knew how the villains felt about the shift in power between them and the heroes, due to All Might’s retirement and Endeavor replacing him. He even saw two kinds of villain groups running rampant on the streets: the noob thieves and the enigmatic killers, with the latter seemingly catching his attention. I’m sure they caught yours too, and just so! Overhaul and his gang’s first but small appearance here was actually one of the reasons I got super excited with this episode!
Cloning mayhem: When Twice first appeared during the Forest Training Arc, he was amusing to watch since he reminded me of Deadpool. But now we know that his bursts of random dialogues are actually due to a tragic incident with his clones! Guess that’s the downside to having sentient copies, and trying to lord it over them, huh? Twice couldn’t even trust himself anymore, both regarding his own clones, and who he truly is. So it’s not surprising that he became unhinged; I actually feel sad for him now! Not knowing if you’re the original or not, even losing your mind, it must be scary. What’s sadder is that he felt only villains can understand him and heroes won’t help him, so he allied himself with the bad guys! Tragic indeed.
New semester: I totally understood why Deku felt frustrated for missing school for three days! Even though school in real life isn’t as fun as hero school, I personally never wanted to miss classes because I also felt left out, and then once I got back, I felt lost! Then again, we may not have seen most of what Class A did during his three days of house arrest, but those we did see didn’t look like much. The principal’s speech about the students being the successors of society, the discussion about the upcoming hero internships, discovering that Class B all got their provisional licenses, seeing Shinso looking a bit buffer than before… okay, those are something. At least he got back in time for the details on the hero internships coming from U.A.’s Big Three!
A disembodied face? Mirio finally made his first appearance, and this is the second reason I was so giddy! It wasn’t just because he was introduced in an odd but funny way. I mean yeah, who goes to see the rumored troublemaker just to satiate his own curiosity, and even surprise him deliberately! Then it turns out he’s actually one of the three who’s at the top of their school’s students! I also noticed that, during the assembly, when All Might was reminiscing about the principal’s words on his successor, the camera focused on Mirio’s back. That was random, but maybe it isn’t? Anyway, I’m just really happy Mirio still got to be in the third season!
Themes & Trivia
Natural American Spirit : If you’re wondering if the cigarette brand Twice mentioned is a parody, or a made-up brand, then I’m here to inform you that it is an actual brand! I’m surprised they didn’t do a parody like what other shows usually do with real-life products.
MHA anime’s loyalty to the manga still makes me highly appreciate it for two reasons. First off, it’s because they’re loyal to how Horikoshi wanted to present his story. Secondly, is because it gets you expecting that there’ll be another season after this! That’s why, like I said earlier, I’m all excited with the way this episode played out! I really, really hope the last episode of this season will have an announcement of the next one as they’ve done last year.
A tilting society
We’ve got a preview of what kind of person Mirio is, but what about the other two of the Big Three? What kind of things will they teach their kouhai? And why did Mirio suddenly offer to fight them? Why did Deku say that his ability is like All Might’s? We have all these questions, but the next episode is already the last, so it’s a wonder how this will play out!
