Welcome to Mob Psycho Episode 3, boy that’s a weird one. Mob seems to be going through some pretty rough moments, cut him some slack.
Mob’s services are like, super popular right now, which leads to Reigen making some pretty poor choices in terms of clientele in order to make himself a quick buck, now that his buns are hot and selling. First, he lies to some weird creep that asks him to curse someone by giving him some fake ass amulet, then he accepts a job from a woman that thinks she is being haunted. When at her apartment, she claims to have seen a ghost staring at her out of her window. The ghost appears, and Mob is shocked: he can feel that this is a human apparition rather than a spiritual one, and that it’s coming from next door. Turns out the neighbour is just a creep that is projecting himself to her to earn her favors (what the actual fuck, men). Mob is shocked that humans seem to be perceiving spirits as a different form of life; to Mob they’re all the same. Reigen gets dragged out again on the same day to escort a group of students who want to take a creepy photo in the woods. Mob gets bullied by some kids in school and gets told to stand up for himself by his friends. A few days later, the students turn up again and ask Reigen to exorcise a ghost that has appeared in their photo. Reigen and Mob head there and find that there is a family of peaceful ghost that lives there and wants to be left alone, then gets a huge personality crisis: he realizes that in such occasions, he needs to make the choice of either exorcising the ghosts or hurting the people who want them gone in order to protect them. Later that night, he falls asleep thinking of all these new complex feelings he has to deal with.
An uncomfortable episode: I felt that this episode had a really strange vibe to it. It felt as if Mob is experiencing this more like a spectator rather than a participant and there was an eerie feeling that something is incomplete the whole time. There was no real climax and the ending was very dry. WHAT IS HAPPENING (also, who the hell cursed Reigen?)
Body Improvement Club: This must be the first time I actually like a group of jocks in any media ever. These guys are pretty damn hilarious and nice to everyone around them. Except bullies. Yeah, you take that, you.
Mob’s growth: I am thinking that the whole concept of this season is Mob’s growth as a character, which is how this episode falls in with the idea of Mob falling in love. We slowly get to witness gradual changes in his character and the way he perceives life.
Reigen does it again: I’m repeating myself, but he’s such a delightful character. He really is a real-life hero, a guy who gets by by scamming others but standing up for what he thinks is right.
Next episode please.
I’m really curious to see where this is going. Who is Mob gonna be by the end of this season? Can there be a real character change in a mainstream anime show?
