And that’s a wrap everybody. Mob Psycho season 2 has come to an end, and what I would consider it to be the end, since le boss is gone.
Where were we last time? Right so Mob has gone through all the previous obstacles that stood between him and the final boss, the annoying redhead with the funky eyebrows. I suppose as far as final bosses go he certainly lacks importance in terms of style. I mean, what is the deal with this basic salaryman outfit? What is he out to do, send some fax and promote synergy?
Yeah, Mob finally gets to the guy, and his son is there smashed to bits. Mob doesn’t want to create any more havoc, so he takes the fight and moves it to the stratosphere (or somewhere very high up anyway), away from where all the people he cares about. Then the episode is basically split in half – the first part is a rather basic final boss battle that takes place in the sky and follows the exact structure of one, then the next is like a little collection of bonus scenes, showing us how the characters are getting along after the final battle. Pretty standard, nothing new.
The battle scene is, of course, very well drawn. We can’t argue with that – the art of the show is great. I, however, personally found that the battle itself lacked climax and didn’t really go anywhere, with the exception of the giant broccoli, which was, without any doubt, the most Mob Psycho think ever. If you’ve watched an unacceptable amount of shonen anime you probably already know what the final boss battle looks like. It’s always structured around some pseudo-tension and the potential threat that the character will, you know, DIE. But the never do. Like, 99% of the time they don’t. Sometimes not even the enemy dies, they keep him alive to reappear later! Seriously though, there is never a single doubt that our hero will win. Usually, halfway through the battle, we get a fake win (that nobody believes is a real one) then the boss comes back all high and mighty, and uses their EXTRA SECRET SUPER POWER THAT OHMYGOD DID WE EVEN KNOW ABOUT THIS and then the hero finds a way around this and wait- what- oh, he won, it’s over. Also he is a super nice guy, the hero. Superior morals, and all. And that’s exactly what the first part of the episode was all about.
The second part was yet another cliche where we basically saw all the villains who regretted their actions getting real jobs and shit (I kind of cringed at that to be honest). We also got to witness a bit of a backstory to angry eyebrow guy, which, of course, involved his strong-willed wife abandoning him, him not expressing his feelings and being a dick, and his son announcing that the mom will now do a COMEBACK and give him an earful for trying to take over the world and having killed a bunch of people. BAD BOY! I’m sorry, I don’t know what with the caps today.
To be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised even another Mob Psycho season popped out of nowhere. It is, after all, anime, and a popular one is a secure investment. So maybe we’ll get more of it. Maybe a season where we explore FEELINGS and stop worrying about guys with weird eyebrows and fragile egos trying to take over the damn world. Just go home.
